monitor continuously turns off and on

I have been trying to get the mplayer working and while doing some internet research my monitor starts blinking on and off like I was setting the resolution. Is this a virus or could it just be a conflict of software?

I have since switched over to XP and my monitor continues to do the same thing!!!! I am sure this would simplify things for an expert, but unfortunately I am not an expert and am still clueless. Any guidance would be great.

Might be time for a new monitor (or video card, I guess). My old monitor did this occasionally, until one time it just started popping and blinking on and off continuously. Over time the frequency increased until it just crapped out.

If it occurs in both linux and windows, it's a safe bet that it's a hardware issue, not a software one.
