Modprobe error in Mandrake 9.1 under Gnome

First things first: I'm running Mandrake 9.1, my window manager is Gnome, my video card is a Radeon VD-GTV-R7064T (ATI drivers in case you don't know).

I had previously posted a question about a problem I was having with X. In that post I had included my dmesg results - see snippet below.
An anonymous user had suggested the following to fix my problem:

In root:
#modprobe intel-agp && modprobe agpgart

or do you have via-agp:
#modprobe via-agp && modprobe agpgart

$ startx

#kwrite /etc/modprobe.preload ** I use Gnome, so I planned to use gedit **

Add the line intel_agp (or via_agp ).

I have an MSI KT4AV-L which has a VIA chipset so I used the via option and got the following message:

modprobe: Can't locate module via-agp.

Being hard-headed I tried the Intel version just in case. I got the same message.
Well, I used gedit to open my /etc directory and could not find the modprobe.preload directory. I know when to quit and run to the forums for help, and this is it.
Is the above procedure suitable to solve my below listed problem?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Here's something I found while Googling for modprobe.
I must confess I'm too much of a newbie to understand what's going on here.
Can someone explain how the below relates to my needs? ASS-U-MEing that it does of course.

Thank you

you did catched me
---------------------------
root@svetljo root]# cat /etc/modprobe.preload | grep agp
# agp
agpgart
via-agp
---------------------------

but i assume it should be smth like the snd cards stuff

install snd-emu10k1 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-emu10k1 && {
/sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; }
remove snd-emu10k1 { /sbin/modprobe -r snd-pcm-oss; } ; /sbin/modprobe -r
--ignore-remove snd-emu10k1

or

install agpgart /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install agpgart && { /sbin/modprobe
intel-agp; /bin/true; }
remove snd-emu10k1 { /sbin/modprobe -r intel-agp; } ; /sbin/modprobe -r
--ignore-remove agpgart
