Question "modem is busy"?

I'm new to linux really. I just installed Mandrake 10.1 on a new AMD 64 computer I built. I have a external CNet external serial modem. That is recognised, but I still can't get it to connect to the internet. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance. I've read the manual a bit, but am not finding a solution to this.

In Mandrake I always found it necessary to open a shell (Konsole) and as root type:
cd /dev
rm modem
ln -s ttySx modem <where x is the number of the port - for my external modem it is ttyS0>

That fixed the "modem is busy" problem.

Hope this helps.
