Mistake on Mandriva Install in text login instead of GUI?
I installed Mandriva 2006 today and by mistake used the text login prompt option instead of the GUI login. How do I revert back to a GUI type environment ?

did you still install kde guis?
if so login as root at the command line
type
init 5
(does X/KDE load?)
Yes
you can edit inittab from the command line
Code:
vi /etc/inittab
look for this you what to change it from 3 to 5 like mine
# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by Mandrakelinux are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
#
id:5:initdefault:
hit I to edit the file
Esc (to stop Editing)
shift+Z+Z (to save and exit.)
No
type
Code:
service xfs start
service dm start
startx
(starts kde/X11 depending what you installed)
you can then type mcc
or click KDE menu> System> Config> Mandrake control Centre> system >Services > tick DM and XFS
edit the inittab file to change deafult to start gui
/etc/inittab
id:5:initdefault:
In case you don't know how to use the vi editor yet, this is another option.
Simply login as regular user, type the command "startx" (without quotation marks). This will get you into init5 (gui). From there you can launch "Configure your Computer" from the start menu or quick launch panel, give root password when asked, go to the "boot" window, select "auto login", then simply select which user and what gui to use, my preference and Mandriva default is kde. And you are good to go.

That will also setup autologin as well as automatic starting of X windows. If you just want to have the normal graphical login screen you only need to tick "Launch the Graphical Environment when the system starts", and leave "no I don't want autologin" selected.
