Missing text in MDK Control Centre KDE and Gnome

Ok so has anyone seen this before?

Everything was fine and then in between one boot and another I lost all text in mandrake control centre 9.1 in KDE and lost all text anywhere in Gnome...

all I have to go by at the moment are the icons and buttons.....

it looks as though it wants to put text where its sposed to as there is a dot in place of text next to the icons and buttons,

the machine has been fine for the last two weeks until now...the last thing I did was reset Aumix for the sound, thats it.

Anyway hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction

thanks in advance

Is it all the text or just the text that goes by the icons?? Have you restarted (rebooted) your machine to see if it fixes itself. How about if you open a terminal?? can you then type text normally?? Maybe it is just something strange with your xserver but would need more information as to what exactly is going on and what you have tried.

Its all the text by the icons, in the title bar...everywhere....yes I can still use a terminal with no problems and yep have restarted the machine a dozen times since.......all programs will work as per norm...but Im floundering in the dark trying to figure out what they are hehehehehe.......the program menu still has all the text though....its just the control panels that are missing theirs......once I run a prog they have their own text....and they are fine......is there any way I can reinstall just the control panels?......I would go through the package manager but as there is no text in there I dont know what Im looking at

Not to sure where to begin troubleshooting here, maybe someone else has had this problem and can help. Can you login to a different window manager (i.e. Gnome, Fluxbox, Xfce) and see if the problem is still there, if not then it may just be something wanky with KDE and a simple uninstall and re-install should fix the problem.

Check if the fonts are getting loaded. The directory to find all your fonts (and I'm assuming it's the same as FreeBSD) can be found in `/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts'.

If you [CTRL]+[ALT]+[BACKSPACE] out of X, are there any messages regarding fonts not being available?

Did you by any chance install/update any rpms before the item on the menu disappeared?

hi,

an old thread i know.. but.. i resolved the fedora missing text here by forcing a re-install of Pango.

it seemed the pango update fubared here before.

Cheers

I had the same problem. pango, part of the GTK toolkit(?), didn't upgrade when I upgraded from 8.2 to 9.2.
This worked.

pango-querymodules > /etc/pango/pango.modules
