midi in mandrake

I haven't had any luck with playing midi files in Mandrake. KMid gives me the message
"can't open /dev/sequencer - perhaps another program is using it"

If I go into the /dev directory, there is no /dev/sequencer.

Rosegarden pukes in pretty much the same way, the version without the sequencer
appears to run.

My knowledge of midi is very limited. I just would like to be able to play a file every
now and again.

Any ideas?

try xmms or mplayer. They work just as well.
Do you know how to open a file with another program?
