Menudrake can't save menus

Hi there,

I tried to add OpenOffice to my KDE menu using Menudrake but after I save the new menus, nothing happens, even after rebooting.

This is what I did:
1.) su -c 'menudrake' to run Menudrake as root
2.) Chose "Update System Menu"
3.) Clicked the "Add Application" button
4.) Entered the title, the file location (/usr/local/openoffice/program/scalc)
5.) Chose the icon
6.) Pressed Save
7.) Exited

And nothing happened. Mysteriously, sometimes when I open Menudrake again, I see the OpenOffice Calc entry in blue font.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,
Vince

try this
open a terminal and type
update-menus -v

after a while the process hangs and doesn't return to a command prompt,
close the terminal manually

there is a bug in mandrake 9.2 that makes the menus buggy and unreliable
(there is a fix for it amongst the updates)

Actually I discovered that update-menus doesn't actually hang....it's apparently waiting for input. Hitting enter brings you back to a command prompt when it's done.

cool
thanks for that

did it work?

Didn't work. The entries I added still don't show up. They are still in blue font in Menudrake.

If it helps, the error in the terminal I get when saving menus is:
ERROR: Couldn't attach to DCOP server!

Does this have anything to do with it?

No one else has ever had this problem?

bump?

I've had the same problem 3 times within the last 3 months...

In the first two cases, knowing much less than I do now (though still far from any level of expertise), I had resorted to reinstallation.

Yesterday, however, I found a solution (perhaps not the best, but it works for me).

First, I logged out from my usual username, then logged in as "root", used a console to start "menudrake" (because menudrake was no longer in my menu as an available application), then by simply changing the names of some folders and apps (such as adding a space to the end), they began reappearing in my menus.

update-menus -v does not seem to work... using the trick mentioned above, and they appear as soon as you click to save.

I know it's probably not the correct solution, but as long as I can access the GUI's and apps I need, it's good enough for me, until somebody posts a better solution.

I have now the same problem after upgrading to Cooker 10.1

After reading the topic about "most stable release" I'm beginning to think my problems come from upgrading rpm packages from Cooker on a 9.2 before 10.0 was ready... It means now I have a half-9 half-10 release...

Anyone know if Mandrake 10 has this problem?

phlyersphan 07-29-2004 08:21 PM

i'm having the same problem in mandrake 10... updated with all bugfixes/etc

salparadise 07-29-2004 11:59 PM

I'm using Mandrake 10 Official and have had no problems at all.

Did anyone manage to resolve the issue ?
I get error cold not attach to DCOP server.

The funny thing is menudrake was working properly prior to installing the updates and bugfixes for MDK 10 OE.
Very strange.
