Hi folks,

I did get mdkkdm to add afterstep. I copied the file afterstep.desktop (that it turns out is in /usr/share/xsessions with hidden extension) to /usr/share/apps/kdm/sessions

Surprise, surprise, it now is presented in the mdkkdm menu.

There's the good news. So if you want to add a WM to mdkkdm and the installation routine was nice enough to create a *.desktop file, but put it in the wrong place, there you go.

A new problem though. When you log out of mdkkdm, you are presented with "halt" and "reboot" options. The reboot option brings up a menu where you can choose "back" or "reboot" with the selection from grub (or lilo) as options for which system to reboot to.

Well, hitting the Halt button does nothing. Click it and nothing happens. Clicking the reboot button give me a blank list. Clicking reboot does nothing, though I can hit the back button to get back to halt or reboot list.

So, shutting down requires me to ctrl-alt-f* into another terminal and manually shut down with a "shutdown -r (or -h) now"

Is it possible to run an executable script from a window manager (I'm still using Windowmaker---hey, I like it) to shut down or reboot? I gave it a shot but got a non-descript error. Something like "not able to execute action".

Thanks,

stunter

I like Windowmaker, too (it's actually pretty great), but I must admit that I've fallen head-over-heels for Openbox 3. By the way (since you actually use WindowMaker), does the -w or --workspace switch work with wmsetbg if WM is running? It doesn't seem to be recognized when used under Openbox for some reason, so the only thing that I'm missing is per-workspace wallpaper.

Anyway, on to your question:

#1, congratulations on getting your original problem solved. I did warn you that this was a "muddy issue", and the only reason that I understated the case is because I only have experience with Linux DMs my own PC, and hoped that this was somehow unique to me.

Apparently not, so now I can definitively say, "the whole situation is a complete befuddled mess," and probably have you agree with a resounding, "Amen!"

In any case, you might want to take a look at /etc/sudoers, consider adding yourself to the wheel group, or possibly the gdm/kdm/xdm/dm group (whichever may exist). Basically, I'm thinking that you are not in whatever group is permitted to use these commands in the dm, but no longer being familar with Mandrake's group policies, I can't advise further, sorry.

motub,

Yea, I'm thinking of jumping to gentoo or other. We'll see.

The --workspace switch works for me while in Windowmaker. I don't know Openbox other than a brief perusing. I'll take another look. There are some things that irritate me about WM but they ten to be minor.

Thanks for the help.
