Mdk9.2 to Mdk10.0 troublez
 

Today I have taken the great decision: I've upgraded from Mdk9.2 to Mdk10.0.
Now I run with the kernel 2.6.3-7.
The problems I have met so far:

- The software manager does not work properly. It does not recognise my cd-roms from which just installed the whole thing.

- The Xmms player does not work, it keeps 'hanging'. A not-working Xmms is a disaster to me. And if I click on it with my mouse, it commits suicide.

If anybody reading this knows how to solve these problemz, pleaze let me know!

the cdrom problem..............

did you have scsi emulation in 9.2? the 2.6.X kernel doesn't not use scsi emulation. since you upgraded, if you had scsi emulation chances are the lines remain in your lilo. check your /etc/lilo.conf file & look at the "append=" lines. if anything thing there says something like "hdX=ide-scsi", remove it. save the file, then as root in terminal run lilo -v. reboot.

as for xmms, i'm not sure. something could have gone wrong in the upgrade. upgrades are known to cause funky problems at times. unless somebody has a better suggestion for you, i'd uninstall xmms, then reinstall it anew & see if that solves the problem.

I had this problem with xmms too.
It's because the command from the menu is 'soundwrapper xmms'
if you change it to just 'xmms' it works fine

Also my system was about as stable as windows xp with the new 2.6.3 kernel so I went back to the old kernel and it runs forever with no problems

i had the same issue with xmms about 20 minutes ago, if you simply open xxms (don't play anything) then go to options->preferences, change your sound driver to ALSA, and it should work fine (unless of course you have chosen not to use ALSA)

I tried dickohead's solution and it works, but it has some problems playing sometimes when you're doing other things on your comp sometimes as simple as typing. It's playing just fine right now though.

EDIT: after clicking configure and changing my mixer it works perfectly

I have changed a few settings and xmms runs. But it remains perfectly silent. Then I checked my boot.log and I found some lines that indicate a problem:

alsa: succeeded
alsactl: /usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:799:
alsactl: warning: iface mismatch (0/2) for control #1
alsactl: /usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:805: warning: name mismatch (Joystick Address/Master Playback Switch) for control #1
alsactl: /usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:892: bad control.1.value type
sound: Loading mixer settings failed

That's what is says, what does it mean? I guess I must hack some conf-files, but where and how.

Later: I have done something with the mixer and now it works (blush!)!!!

The problem with the softwaremanager has been solved. It had nothing to do with any scsi-emu, something went wrong with the update-source during the upgrade .

Upgrades are not the best solution, often leading to crashes ... a fresh install is the main solution.
