Talking mdk9.2 problems and a easy fix

I preordered mdk 9.2 powerpack then started reading on the forums about all the bugs in it.When it came in was almost scared to try it because of this but did it anyway.I tried to upgrade 9.1 to 9.2 and was rewarded with black screen at restart on two different machines.Seems that upgrade does not work with certain video cards(geforce4mx,ati aiw 7500)So i was on to a fresh install.
The fresh install went fine 9,2 recognized and configured all my hardware(excellent ).First boot went well good to go right?NOT!
THIS IS A LIST OF THE PROBLEMS I WAS HAVING(this is all in KDE)

after installing more apps everything is gone from start menu
desktop icons don't work
konqueror file preview don't work
second harddrive will not mount
printer wont work with same software and settings that i used in 9.1
links on desktop that i created open totem not the app or web page
I get the message data retrieval from devices is not supported when opening a cd-rom
Java based app won't run
many programs start then freeze

after a few days of googleing and surfing the forums i found many suggestions on how to fix these bugs most to complicated for this newbie (been with linux about 6 months)and as fast as i fixed one problem another came up.Then i figured it out

For some reason the user identity that the system created at setup is corrupt !!!or incomplete.?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE FIX ===========CREATE A NEW USER IDENTITY=========================
when i set my self up a new user account (and left the original intact)It fixed all the problems listed above. This worked on two different machines a dell4550 stock and a poweruser box i built.
Now my system is running better stronger faster than ever Got to love 9.2 once you get passed the setup bugs

One question anyone know anything about dr.web AV it created a user account for its self .but it logs in to a blank screen There are no docs on there web site whats up with that?

These are the most problems i have ever had with a linux disto(i have played with 4 different ones)but this is the easiest linux fix i have seen so i guess it balances out
Peace out I hope this helps someone

I have the same menu problem in windowmaker. Most installed stuff won't get in the menu. I can't get it in the menu either. Normally you just add it in menudrake but it's already there. A new account solves it all?? weired!

Have you tried deleting the new account and see if the problems return?

You don't need to go through all of that just to fix the menu problem.
type this in console:

update-menus -v

that should fix it. Piece of cake. If that doesn't work, take out the "s" in "menus". I don't remember if it's "menus" or "menu".

It's update-menus for sure. The other thing that work is open the menu-editor and without changing anything do a save.

good point. The only issue with that is then if you install new programs via your disks you won't see them in the menu. If you run update-menus -v after installing all those proggys then they'll be there.

when I do the 'update-menus -v' the process stalls after a while saying Update-menus[3315]: Running method:/etc/menu-methods/simplified//kde3. Anyone got a clue why?

Thank you so much! I just went searchig for the answer to that particular problem! update-menus -v works prefectly! I am having a lot more errors with 9.2 then i ever had in 9.1. I guess it still has a lot of bugs to iron out.

mandrake 9.2 worked alright for me, however, i had the same problems with the menus too. the update-menu -v works fine, but i didn't want to do a fix all the time. so i ended up moving to slackware 9.1. i am really glad that i did. now i know what all the slackers are talking about. i learned more in one day then the entire time i used mdk (wizard dependency). okay, i am a newb, so it wasn't that long (a month and a half on mdk). btw, i used mdk 9.1 and i really liked it. that is what prompted me to buy (yes, i said buy!) 9.2. i decided to support the linux effort by purchasing 9.2. i am really bummed that i spent money on a buggy product.

i am a slackware advocate now!
