I have just found an answer .
another question is " Does this affect other programs or the whole system?"

LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL

Thanks for posting this! I was getting the same error with FlexLM (used for MATLAB and MAPLE) and this does the trick!

And to answer your question, the export command does not effect the "whole system". It effects only the things which are run in the "same environment".

run "export" in a shell and it will list all of the environment variables. If you export something like "export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL", "LD_ASSUME_KERNEL = " will now appear in the list when you run the "export" command, but only in the local shell. It will not effect other shells which are currently running or any which you may start later. You can verify this by running "export" in a new shell.

unixODBC

My problem is that I get this error when using unixODBC driver for MySQL. :-/ I'd like a better solution than defining an environment variable for a service.

SQLConnect() failed
Diag(hdbc 0x8275ed8):01000:0:[unixODBC][Driver Manager]Can't open lib '/usr/lib/libmyodbc.so' : /usr/lib/libmyodbc.so: symbol errno, version GLIBC_2.0 not defined in file libc.so.6 with link time reference
