Question MDK Multi-network-firewall - where are the network logs stored?

Hi I have a copy of MNF 8.2 (the latest I believe), I cannot get the box to act as a gateway/router. It seems like eth1 (LAN) and eth0 (ADSL) don't talk to each other.

What I want to do is look at the logs to see exactly where the packets are getting dropped/lost. There must be logs of all the connection attempts... or a way of making a log so I can troubleshoot this.

Where would the logs be stored on MNF? thanks.

Usually you can find all you want in /var/log, either in syslog or messages.

I don't know of a how-to on this, but there is a lot of useful info in the mandrake archive here:

http://archives.mandrakelinux.com/firewall/

...and here:

thanks going over the archives now

but the main problem i have is trying to get log in using admin account through the web interface. It simply doesn't work. I've tried one of the moderator's tips on disabling shorewall ie. shorewall clear but that doesn't work.

at first when mnf starts i had 'failed' when looking for etho1 but i managed to fix that by creating a separate ip address for the machine and gateway for the client. that's fixed the failed message

now i can ping the mnf but when i try to get the mnf to ping the client i get dropped packets.
i figured if i can't log in through a browser on another machine, it must be something to do with permissions or the firewall (which i cleared the table)

PS like to mention that i had a fresh install of both client and mnf machines so there must be something i'm missing

try stopping shorewall: "shorewall stop"

what do you mean it "simply doesn't work"? can you get the web browser to connect to the IP of the mdk machine, and get a login prompt? Or can you not even get to that point? What is the error message that means "it doesn't work"?

Also, you may want to consider starting another thread on this.

I was able to get my mandrake MNF server working, so i will help you if I can.
