MDK 10 install fails with "signal 11"

Same problem on both PCs
Asus A7V / Athlon 600 (SCSI only Adaptec 29160)
Asus K7VM2 / Athlon 2400 (+ IDE + Fireport40)

Mandrake 9.2 has loaded fine on both (though I managed to wreck one with a bodged kernel upgrade, and I am having to start again) - I'm learning!

In both cases this before the kernel is fully initially loaded - It appears to complain that it cant find a keyboard, successfully apparently loads the two USB modules + then.... signall 11 sending termination signal....

I've browsed the mandrake site and LQ, other than a reference to some USB problems.
"does the panel think" this is the same problem, or some other problem, and where should I look / how should I fix this
