MDK 10 "higher" security issues

When setting the system security settings to "higher," Mandrake notes that access to FAT32 drives will be limited to root.

Changing the file/directory permissions to 777, 755, 744, or 711 results in chmod reporting that it makes the changes, but checking permissions immediately after shows the change was either not made or reverted back to 700.

If I try to change owner to the users group as root, I get a message telling me that I'm an invalid user (using chown or the Konqueror GUI).

The applicable line from the fstab :
/dev/hdb1 /mnt/win_d/ vfat umask=0,user,codepage=850,iocharset=iso8859-1 0 0,

and from the mtab:
dev/hdb1 /mnt/win_d/ vfat defaults 0 0

I have the drive shared with Samba, and if I try to access it that way, I get "/mnt/win_d does not exist or is not a directory, when connecting to [Archives]" in the syslog. I know Samba is set up right because I can access my user directory without problems.

What needs to be modified to allow normal users access to a FAT32 drive while on the higher security level?

Out of curiosity, why do you want the higher security level? Setting high security levels is all about restricting user-mode access.

Just because I know it should be able to work. I'm not looking to make the thing a workstation (it's an older PIII 450), just a server.
