MDK 10.1 problems

Hi,

I recently installed MDK 10.1 on my dell inspiron 5150. I'm happy about the damm thing because finally acpi is working but there are of course some problems.

Like I have serious problems with my sound ... I mean I have sound not a problem there but xmms and amarok crash (xmms doesn't make music and amarok crashes when it goes to another song and the whole kde freezes the only thing i can do is move the mouse, ctrl-alt-backspace or Fx doesn't work anymore to go to a terminal) mplayer works fine but everytime it switches song it says that he can't find the sound driver ... but plays anyway.

I also found out that there are a couple of packages not on the 5 CDs which are on the ftp servers of the devel 10.1 directory. For example juk is not there xemacs (the plugins) are not there.

Did anybody has these problems also.

So now i wanted to install from source amarok 1.1.0 beta2 but it complains about
checking for X... configure: error: Can't find X includes. Please check your installation and add the correct paths!
So i want to install XFree86-devel ... but I can't find it anywhere. Not on the CD's and not on the ftp ... where the hell is it?
And then I also noticed that it is impossible to uninstall the XFree rpm which is on it somehow but nowhere to be found with the remove tool.

any help would be welcome

klaas

First of all, your sound card might be a problem. If the drivers don't support hardware mixing, and two programs try to open the sound device to play music, one of them gets "/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy". It gets even better... With the artsd running, XMMS is sure to crash if it's using some other sond daemon (like ESD/OSS/ALSA). Do avoid this, you can either disable artsd for good (in kcontrol), or set it's auto-suspend to 1 second.

I usually do a "killall artsd" before running xmms. I dunno what sound card you have (or the system), so it might not even be your case.

Building amarok... install the devel libs (xorg-libs or something like this ending with devel). If they are installed, find out where they are (rpm -ql packagename) and pass the dirs dirrectly to the configure script.

With the missing packages... they're all in the contrib as I know. Add the [FTP_MIRROR]/devel/cooker/i586/media/contrib to the media manager. The DLD isos might not contain the files. (adding the source will download around 25-26 megs off the ftp).

Sometimes you can look in /var/log/syslog for driver error messages and stuff.

Hey thanks I did it and remarcably this thing works cool. Why does XMMS crash always if you use this artsd thing?

Yes there you say it, they are in the cooker part. But if they make CD-iso shouldn't they be there also? That was actually the point that i wanted to make. I think that mandrake was a bit sloppy in making there last distro public, the cd's of the 10.1 community are not complete, even with the club images.
Anyway I am still a big fan of mandrake, definitely when I see how much trouble suse has if you want to use BackupPC with it. On mandrake no problem, there the rsync gives more problems then solutions.

As I know Mandrake won't include contribs in the main part of the distro (from which they create their iso's), unless the community votes for it. Packages that are in the contribs are either packages that have a license that's in contradiction/different with their License Agreement, either because there are other packages more usefull that can be put on the iso's. It's like putting in some xmms and emacs pugins that would take out from the distros the coreutils package or something like this.
