You can use the DHCP option ONLY if you have a local DHCP server on your network, or your computer is plugged directly into your cable modem, w/o employing anything like PPOE, etc.
Usually AP's with built in routers, feature NAT and DHCP servers built in.

Yes you can...
However first...
1) Is this the same machine that is USUALLY plugged directly into the cable modem?
2) To connect to the internet previously using that same cable modem, what did you have to do?

i wouldnt do a net install ...ive had many problems with it in the past....... www.acnova.com and get the isos.
what it sounds liek is that ur ethernet chip is NOT supported by linux ...possibly a winchip........and thus with the error is saying it is NOT getting a ip address.

WinCHIP for ethernet devices?
No such animal yet (thankfully). I don't know where you got this information from but it's quite incorrect.
And no the error does not indicate that the ethernet card is unsupported, as he has not tried a static IP.
Network installs are NOT problematic either, once you have a good working connection. It's the basis for many other installers, ala, Gentoo, etc.

It would help if you answered the questions....
1) Is this the same machine that is USUALLY plugged directly into the cable modem?
2) To connect to the internet previously using that same cable modem, what did you have to do?

did ur modem use DHCP or Static ip addresses
DHCP = gives you a ip address with no fuss
static = u have to make up your own ip and subnet address.......... can be a little of a butt to do if u know nothing about networks

if you upgrade to kde3.3 it will break menudrake, which means that you will not be ableto update your menus. You will need to manually switch to kde menus. kde 3.3 looks great but having menudrake broken is very annoying...

Hey SlipAway172 your statement about every network needing a password is totally incorrect. Cable modems DO NOT use passwords! Actually every cable modem now has its own adapter address like a NIC card. The cable company has the choice of using the adapter address from the modem or the NIC in the puter. Seeing these days though most windows people tend to take the USB connection option if the modem has it, the one onboard the modem is the adapter address of choice.
