MDK 10.0 - No sound & error msg at bootup

Good people...this Newbie problem has probably been done a hundred times before...so plse forgive me... I've tried, believe me! OK...yesterday installed MDK 10.0...dual boots with W2K pro. The latter system recognises the Onboard Sound card fine (SiS 7018 I think). But this Linux doesn't. I've tried perusing forums & google etc...seen lots of useful info, but my relative Linux newbie status prevents me from doing such daring stuff as downloading drivers or recompiling kernels. I'm not yet in that league. If SKS can please advise on the whys, wherefores & how-to's to get my Linux booting WITH sound, I'd be eternally grateful. I've done a DMESG cmd and it gives streams of info...I can try & cut/paste if required.
Cheers... Paul.

Mandrake doesn't require anything as extreme as kernel compilations.

As posted you may need to install additional drivers, but the Mandrake distro makes this a snap.

First go to

http://www.zebulon.org.uk/urpmi_en.html

And set up your urpmi sources as indicated.

This also opens up things so you have a slew of new applications available to you either via the command line or the "Install Software" GUI interface that you can look through at will.

Then while logged in as root type

urpmi arts auxmix kmix

And let it work it's magic.

Also as root type

cat /etc/modprobe.conf

and post the output here so we can see.

Not the same thing

Nvidia is not posting information about their Nforce chipset however kernel support seems to be underway.

SIS has been around a bit longer so it's likely that his chipset may work.

However a 27.00 Soundblaster Live card is a much easier solution.
