Mandrake doesn't require anything as extreme as kernel compilations.
As posted you may need to install additional drivers, but the Mandrake distro makes this a snap.
First go to
http://www.zebulon.org.uk/urpmi_en.html
And set up your urpmi sources as indicated.
This also opens up things so you have a slew of new applications available to you either via the command line or the "Install Software" GUI interface that you can look through at will.
Then while logged in as root type
urpmi arts auxmix kmix
And let it work it's magic.
Also as root type
cat /etc/modprobe.conf
and post the output here so we can see.
