Massive display corruption with ATi

Hi, im trying to install the ati drivers (i have a 9800XT) on mandrake 10. I've followed various guides here on the forum and the one at rage3D. But whenever i boot up with the new drivers i get massive display corruption and freezing. The background looks like the windows XP shutdown screen too which is odd! the KDE splash comes up but everthing is grabbled and completely unusable.

Only things i can think of is that it could be because i havnt added the

install fglrx /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install
into /etc/modprobe.conf

and /sbin/modprobe fglrx
into /etc/rc.d/rc.modules

but manually loading the modules from a shell and starting x also leads to the same problem. I'm trying to install the 3.9.0 drivers because they are the only ones which recognise my KT400 chipset. otherwise i have to correct the bus location in the XF86Config-4

any ideas anyone?

also whats a good shell text editor in mandrake. something like nano from gentoo?
