Many things broken after upgrading from 9.2 to 10.0 Official
 

All these things are KDE related.

PANEL:
Popup menu for panel has entry "Configure Panel...", which does nothing when clicked.

K-MENU:
Changes made to the menu, with either kmenuedit or menudrake do not appear in the menu.

KCONTROL:
Several modules misssing that used to be there (like "Look 'N Feel"). The only ones there are:
- Compnents
- Information
- Peripherals
- Power Control (and this isn't a laptop...)

KPACKAGE:
Freezes at startup.

JUK:
Runs, but does not play anything when an item is double-clicked. I know aRts works, as I've heard several bells via KNotify...

KNode:
Has an identity to use for newsgroups, but posts articles using my KMail identity instead. Thank you! I wanted my email address harvested...

KONSOLE:
Used to be able to use small fized font. Now, Midnight Commander borders are rendered as small boxes because of something screwy with the | and _ characters. Setting Konsole font to "Linux" cleans this up, but leaves me with big honking text and a term screen that is larger than I want it.

This forum needs one more smiley icon: a face with steam rising from the head...

Anybody have any ideas how I can fix some of this stuff? Thanks!

sometimes upgrades can cause funky problems, versus a clean install. myself, i've been using the upgrade method from 9.1 to 9.2 to 10.0 with very little or no problems. first thing i'd suggest is, if you haven't already, egt all the available updates/bugfixes. there are quite a few that address many of the issues you are facing. secondly, if you dloaded the .iso files for free online, you won't have the missing "disk 4". that contains quite a few standard apps. set up a "main" source using EasyURPMI. the "main" source will contain all the apps that you get with CD4 #4. after installing things, restart KDE because not all changes/additions take effect imediately.

if you follow those steps (or have done them already) & are still having problems, please post back & we'll try to tackle things one at a time.

Already ahead of you. I did setup main, contrib and plf sources with easyurpmi (great tool, btw) and have installed all updates. I was actually amazed at how many things didn't install by default as part of the upgrade. How can Mandrake call that a "finished" release?...

So, what shall we tackle first?

ok...........are you still having all of the above problems after installing updates & addtional packages? if so, here are some suggestions............

the kcontrol missing modules should have been fixed with the updates. if not, this maybe be menu/dead link related. see next..........

the menu bug i had after the upgrade, too. seems it confuses the kmenu/menudrake settings with old & new & mixes them. from kmenu (or menudrake) (i'm going by memory here, not at the linux box, so please use these instructions as a guideline to feel your way along) choose the "menu style" & make sure it loads system menu not user config. view menus should be "all applications" not KDE. save any changes you make, then run from terminal as root update-menus -v. do it again as normal user. restart KDE. that fixed the menu problem for me. it also may fix kcontrol, becuase i found that kde view in kmenu brought up a different/older version of kcontrol. that should also fix your dead links with "configure your......"

never used juk, so can't help much there..........

same for knode.........

for the font problem, use kcontrol->looknfeel->fonts. some of my 9.2 font settings were lost during the upgrade & i had to reset them. not the fonts themselves, just the settings i had used. you can also adjust fonts for konqueror specifically. it's in tools->configure konq somewhere.

if you have apps crashing/freezing probs, try running them from command line & see if you get any error reports. if you get no useful info, what i'd sugest is use MCC->remove software & uninstall the offending apps, then reinstall them. i ran into a few conflicts with some apps after the upgrade...........mplayer, opera, ksysguard, & some others. uninstalling then reinstalling them fixed it. i thinik it was due to some conflicts from residual 9.2 things that the upgrade didn't catch/upgrade properly.

by doing the various things above, my 10.0 is running flawlessly now. if none of the above works for you, then i'd say you have 2 other options.........

run the upgrade again for 10.0. it won't take long since it' all installed basically. but it sometimes does fix things that the first upgrade borked. i had to do that with 9.1 to 9.2 & it corrected the few probs i was having.

if that doesn't work, then about the only other thing i can suggest is, back up what you might not want to lose, reinstall 10.0 but don't format /home. you'll get a fresh install that way & your /home personal settings will be preserved. you'll just have to set up a bunch of external apps & various plugins & stuff anew.

EDIT: one other thing..........
you say you added a "main" source. did you install the KDE stuff that's contained there? if not, type KDE in the search box of software installer & give it a look for anything on the main source. you may be surprised at how many normal KDE apps & addons were left off of the 3 downloadabe .iso's. install most or all of the additional KDE stuff.

Later (tonight, actually) I'll run through some of those things. 'Have to finish something and get it off to client. (Happy to have a client in these tough times!) Maybe then, too, you'll be by your Linux box and we can compare entries. Right now, though, I can tell you that I did install everything kde* after setting up the new 'main' source.

i decided to do a clean install when moving from 9.2 to 10.0. for the most part things went smoothly but i too had menu and sound problems.

menu: of the available menu styles that can be selected under menudrake i prefer "original menu". i then run menu updating tool to add legacy apps that don't appear on this menu by default, then manually add 3rd party/non kde apps. while you can select original menu from menudrake as far as have been able to determine you can not edit this menu from menudrake. for that you seem to need to use kmenuedit. it wasn't installed on my machine (i must have somehow missed it during the package selection process) so i did urpmi kmenuedit. once it installed i ran it, tweaked a few things but to my dismay it frooze when i went to save. repeated the process a few time until i remembered going through the same drill w/9.2. i logged out/logged back in and presto kmenuedit worked just fine.

sound: sound system settings are finicky. arts kept crashing on me. i had set the sound buffer to "maximum possible" when i backed it off a notch arts returned to normal functioning. you mention that sound doesn't work under juk. what about with other multi-media apps? noatun? xmms? if the problem isn't app specific you might try going through the sound configuration options and making systemati changes one at a time to see if changing a simple solves the problem.

I did all the things you mentioned with menudrake and my menu *still* doesn't show the things I added.

I've run the upgrade again to no avail. Installing afresh is probably the way to go, but I refuse to spend that kind of time backing up everything. (A weekend backup takes 7 hours...) I may have no choice, but before I do that, I'm ging to rename ~/.kde to ~/oldkde, restart KDE and see what happens.

After trying everything that my talented friend here suggested, I spent a day backing up ~/home across the LAN and then did a fresh install everything (well, almost everything) works fine.

The only remaining problem (that I know of for now...) relates to Konsole and I will post it in another thread.
