manual mandrake shut down hard on hard drive

Hi I am newby to mandrake and only owning a pc for a year now, I have just reciently installed mandrake 9.2 beside win. xp on a second hard drive setup as a slave and am loving it, however I reached a snag in that I can't shut down properly, and indeed cannot even restart, when restarting my bios keeps recycling the memory test and esc. dosen't stop it, only the front switch does. Shut down gets as far power down then hangs .must shutdown by the front power switch. Don't mind doing this to much except am worried about my hard drive being damaged by this. My bios is pheonix award bios ,mother board is ad75, and it is acpi enabled in the power settings of the M. board. Any help would be apreciated, or just reasurance as to my hard drive safty in shuting down in this maner . Thanks

A thought,
run:

init 6

this reboots your computer. when you see the bios screen, use the front power switch to turn it off

--or--

init 0
this should stop your computer

--or--

halt this should shutdown your computer.

Post which one works

Thanks Mckenzie, but in vain i'm afraid, init 6 and init 0 would not run, halt would run but to the same result as shuting down from the logout menu, Mandrake shuts down as far as the power down line then nothing, this same thing happened with knoppix, but I thought that was because it was run from the cd,and would not be experienced with a full install of a linux distribution, but it is clear there is some conflict with my mother board or bios. Could it be because mandrake is running from the slave drive, and not on a partition with windows? My only gripe with having to do the final kill with the switch is a concern of damaging my hard drive or something, maby there is no danger has mandrake seems shut down itself? Anyway thanks for trying,I appreciate it.
