Mandy 9.2- Passwords have become 5-6 letter words I can't change.

Well, everything was fine and well, untill I decided to shut down the computer. Today I tried to start up Mandrake 9.2 and lo and behold, I couldn't log on as my two user accounts. So I tried to log on as root (offline) to change the passwords back to normal.

But strangely, when I did, they'd just change back.

So now I can only log in as root. Any idea what's causing this, and how to fix it?
