Mandrive One Live CD (KDE and GNOME) not working :(
 

Hi, I just downloaded both of these free versions, (the KDE and GNOME Mandrive One) so I could try it out. Well, I restart with the CD inside the tray, and then press F12 to choose to boot from the CD, and then it starts with the booting. But after the progress bar reaches the end, instead of a language selection I get a black screen and nothing happens. No CD or Hard Drive activity. I've waited about 20 minutes, and nothing happens. What could be the problem?

Oh, another thing, it did work in my friend's computer.

Similar problem to yours. Mine reaches the end and then calls for a Username; and password;. Then loops endlessly refusing to recognise either, whatever I enter. Guest does not work. The CD was burned from a Free download in APC magazine. Any suggestions anywhere?

When you get to the black screen, use the CTRL+ALT+F1 keyboard combination to switch to the first console screen. You should see some output from trying to load Xorg. If you see any error messages, record them and post them here.

Which video adapter is installed on this computer? It is possible that Mandriva One does not recognize it.

If you are unable to get Mandriva One to boot on your computer, another way to try out Linux is to install a Virtual Machine then use it to boot the Live CD's for various distributions until you find one you like. When you do, install it to the VM and use it there for a while.

MS offers a VM, although I know very little about it. VMware offers beta test copies of its Workstation software from time to time. There is also an Open Source solution which I use here (Linux version) named VirtualBox. There is a Windows version available.

The Ctrl + Alt + F1 thing doens't work. It stays black. Is it supposed to do something?

I expected it to give you a text log in screen, but the disk may not have booted far enough. Using a VM may be your best bet at this point.

Do you have another version of Mandriva already on your computer? I installed Mandriva One (2007.0) from CD. It worked fine before and after install. However, when I downloaded the live CD for Mandriva Spring 2007, it would not work. It hung somewhere during boot up -- similar to yours.

My guess might be that some drivers that were on the earlier CD are missing from the new CD. Perhaps you might want to try the DVD instead?

When you guys put in the live cd and boot, at the cd boot menu, press f3, then press f4... try selecting each of those options, one at a time.

Highlight one with your arrow keys, press enter to select it, then press b or enter to boot.

I had similar problems but I got a little bit further by selecting no acpi as the option. Still though, the live cd does not boot completely on my desktop.

My desktop is a
AMD Athlon X2 3600+
Asus M2A-VM motherboard
NVIDIA 8600 GTS

The CD works on my buddy's laptop perfectly. He got it installed without any problems or editing.

I think the problem for me is to update my BIOS because of the whole acpi thing which is a BIOS-OS parameter.

I remember reading a thread about going to ctrl+alt+1 logging in as root on the live cd and running a display driver setup. I am new to mandriva so if anyone remembers can you please link to it on this thread or be so kind to reply.
