Hi, I downloaded and installed the 4 cd's (MDV Free 2007), and it worked just fine... So far so good, no major problem... If your DVD doesn't work, try getting those 4 cd's...
It seems to be a common problem ,perhaps calculated to be so.
I beleive they are now trying to make money bigtime by flogging these discovery and other versions you have to pay for.
When you install the 2007 the video configuration is not right and the detection of my 19" LCD did not go well . It got the sync rates and name wrong . I have corrected those in /etc/x11/Xorg.conf but am still trying to get it to start.
If I get it going I will post back here but I have not had a Mandriva system get past this hurdle since Mandriva 2006 came out.

Whoa that's a bit harsh. Are you calling into question the committment Mandriva has towards making an open source free op/sys that works available?
I have myself successfully installed Mandriva 2007 (free DVD) on no less than 5 different systems, and they all boot and work perfectly fine.
I did however have the same problems you described when I used the free DVD from a certain Linux Magazine. Upon investigation I found out that the magazine version was in fact a cooker version.
It's where the testing is done, If you want to try Mandriva out give it a go.
Though previous linux knowledge is required.
I also am using the LinuxMagazine dvd and found no probs.
x86_64, Athlon 3500+, asus A8v-mx, 1 gig ddr2, GeForce 7600gt (256meg, ddr3) sata hdd's, Diamond Digital DV177 tft monitor. And wireless (ralink-RT2561 ver c)
Do you get a login prompt? if not try "ctrl-alt-BackSpace" to get to a command line terminal.
From there I would try, "ifconfig" to see it the net link is up.
Cooker is similar to beta. (the bleeding edge)

Then if so, "urpmi --update --auto-select --auto"
see how you go!
PS, Happy Holidays EveryOne.
Ok good this is where my dvd comes from , Linux Magazine November 2006, I have a 19" LCD display
control alt delete will switch the machine it off but it wont tell you that
control alt backspace does nothing
certainly can't get a command line .
I settled on it being the screen Xwindow configuration and have been fiddling with that.To no avail
Maybe thats a clue -no command line either
Can you add any other suggestions? I'd appreciate it I've used them all up to 2006 which was just too big for my hard drive at the time but I might go back and try the 2006 disk again. However Id like to get the latest 2007 to run if I can seeing as I have it installed
Hi, I think that I understand what Tytower is saying and basically it depends on the kind of final installation that we want.
I have loaded the free 2007 and have been finding that the structure of the program appears to have been changed from what it was in 9.1 thru 10.2. I never loaded 2006 but in free 2007 it's like it's a cut down version and after having explored the mandriva site and finding the listings of the programs included in the 3 versions, that pretty much says that to get the complete distro, you have to pay for it now.
As for the problems in /etc/x11/Xorg.conf, I am not surprised but nor would I criticize Mandriva for not finding your particular lcd since linux doesn't really force companies to supply them with equipment specs and drivers like microsoft.
Tytower, I suggest to re-run the dvd, do it as an update, then see what 2007 suggests in the screen and graphics card selection as I have had to do that in the past too.
As for myself, loading free 2007 should work very well as a workstation for anyone just trying to get started.
In my case, having to load bind and some other programs that were always included in the previous distros is a change in strategy.
You don't have to pay anything for getting the "complete" version.
If you have urpmi properly configured, you can get the exact same features as those you get with a Powerpack, except LinDVD which is a commercial software.
Of course, you'll have to tweak a bit more to install proprietary drivers and other non-free software.

You say the first time you started linux there was some kind of wizard, Therefore it did install & boot ok. Cooker is not beta it is a stable distribution with lates vesiobs of software.
What happened to stop booting that is the problem did you change anything.

Sharke

All noted peterb . Thanks for comments
I dual boot now with Mepis and Ubuntu both of which have no problem with my screen.
I don't think it is the configuration rather a bug ,intentional or not ,that does not allow the xWindow to start

As much as I agree with you on the fact that Mandriva really pushes the reader on the website to buy one of its products (I can understand them, since they are honestly out there to make money), I have to comment that I use Mandriva Free 2007, properly configured with the urpmi sources, and I have everything I need. FYI, I never paid a dime !
Actually my KDE config is the one from Mandriva PowerPack+ now, since it is avalaible in the repos...
