Yes this is a brand new XP Home system, pre-installed by Dell.
As I say, the linux partitions have already been created by me using Partition Magic 8.0.

Ubunta 5.10 can see the SATA partitions, but Mandriva 2006 can not.
I can not just install the Ubunta CD I have, as it does not contain the development tools, and I particularly use linux for development.

Mandriva needs to be able to access the SATA drives using the Intel 82801GB controler - if anyone hears of any progress on this, please let me know.

I note what you guys are saying about new chipset - has anyone tried the new club members only december issue just out?

Thanks for you help, I change the bios and I've also got the installed debian 3.1r1a Sarge in a dell GX520.
