mandriva shows me a blue screen (can't log in).........HELP
 

when Mandriva comes to splash screen the screen turns blue. that's happened when i changed metisse to beyrl using XGL instead of default cuz default I wasn't able to choose it while compiz worked great and it was on default.

when i entered safe mode but i didn't know what to do there.

how can i change it to no 3d so i can log in again.

Hi, Welcome to LQ!

When you get the login screen, find "login to console"from one of the buttons near the bottom of the screen.

When the terminal appears (when the gui disappears.) login as root, then type

"drakx11", that will bring up the display configure applet.

You can test your set up before you close it.

If that won't work try "drakxconf", that will bring up a menu of settings, where you will find "Display", that may be modified.

but unfortunately i can't see anything in the screen (it's all blue) even when i login cuz i'm not using password for the user and the screen is blue.


is there a way to (disable the 3d from safe mode) of do something in the safe mode

I'm not sure about safemode, but try services or drakservices to turn off your dm daemon(display manager)

if not,

you can restart the x-server By pressing ctrl-alt-backspace, but I think you may have to something before that.

reboot the system. While the system boots, from the grub (or lilo) menu, select non-fb, for non frame buffer.

Then while the kernel is loading, get ready to tap the i key. This will promp the user to comfirm y or n for the starting each of the service for the system.

When the blue MANDRIVA wrtiting appears, be tapping the i key to confirm each daemon to be started, and when you see the dm prompt (usually the last one) say NO.

Now you should be at the terminal login prompt.

yes i was in the terminal login prompt but there is only commands! how would i disable the 3d from there? (i only know from the desktop "hardware management")

You could try a reinstall, of mandriva, that may be faster.

Yes. It will want to format the root directory at least. But there is an option to upgrade your system to the cd version (even if itś the same version), which won do much but should allow you to reconfigure your settings towards the end of the process (no formatting). Also check out the rescue menu to see if anything there may be of assistance to you.

One way around this is to use/setup multiple partitions, at least one for home.

Personally, I have boot, root, usr, var, var/ftp, home, swap (of course) 4 windows partitions (1 ntfs and 3 fat32)

and then 4 other linux partitions for storing and backing up stuff.

But there is another way out of this.

What I call the splash screen, comes up after logging in. The log-in screen has the options of what dm you will use.

Slight misunderstanding there.

To uninstall beryl, you'll need at least to get to a command prompt. Can you do that?

If so type at the prompt, Without the quote marks,

"rpm -e beryl"

If you get a list of complaints about dependencies try adding the --nodeps switch. like this,

"rpm -e --nodeps beryl". You may well find that beryl is dependent on some thing that is not working or is mis-configured. AND, Beryl is started after you login, not before.

But now I realise what screen you meant, it may well be a Xorg problem, not Display Manager as I thought before.

What 3d drivers did you have installed? Are you using DKMS to load the graphics driver dynamically or are you using the proprietory drivers from nvidia or ati?

To keep it simple and get you back to the beginning, I'd try the reinstall/upgrade option from the mandriva boot-cd

If you just get a blue screen when you start Mandriva, try pressing the CTRL+ALT+F2 keyboard combination to get to a console display. Log in as root, then execute telinit3 to close Xorg. Form there you should be able to follow Glenn's original suggestions
