Mandriva network problems

Is it me or mandriva is one of the most annoying linux distributions you have stambled into ?. My 1001 problem is that my internet connection always breaks (I use PPPoE) and it takes many tries until it even connects. Sometimg it doesn't connect at all. The only informative thing I get is a message telling me to configure the netwrok, a thing I had done thousands of times and still problems. One thing they could do is learn from microsoft (I know it is a hard thing to say but in this case its a MUST) and print more informative information so I would know where the problem is (i.e. "Server is busy" , "No response from remote computer" etc....).

With my previous ubuntu distributions and with my windows XP I don't have any of these problems.

So it must be something with this distribution. If anyone knows or has a solution (besides installing another linux dist cause I don't have time for this) plz post it here.

thx.

Maybe you should tell us what kind of modem do you use?
Or did you call your ISP and tell them to check the line????? Man don't blame Linux because some hardware manufacturers don't make drivers for Linux.... and if it works with Ubuntu why don't you stick with it....? or with winblows...... I also use PPPoE and it NEVER breaks the connection..... did you try to launch the connection from a command prompt???? (you would be surprised how many information it will give (something that microshit should learn...))

Man, do you really think it is reasonable today to run things from a command prompt ?. Ofcourse it is a good thing to know, but linux can provide a much better way for doing this. I have installed manrdiva because their 3D destkop amazed me. And whats more amazing is that for installing Vista I need a computer with 2 cpu's , the newest graphics accelerator etc... . And for mandriva I use my old computer with my old ATI 9000 Radeon and evertyhing is smooth and fun. It just annoyed me that the internet connection is very not intuitive. For you it works, so you say fine. But when it doesn't work and you don't get the least information for knowing whats the problem, thats annoying.

All in all, besides this I enjoy the distribution and don't ment to make it look bad or something.

Have a nice day you all .

There's nothing wrong with the command line. If you don't like it:
- First, you don't HAVE TO always use it; you can use it only when you need all the debug information.
- Second, once you achieve a working command, Linux-based GUI always allow you to put a front-end to it: a menu item, a button, a desktop shortcut...

So please help us help you.

Yes I do provided the situation warrants it. The GUI is useful for doing things in an intuitive and productive manner using broad strokes to accomplish tasks. This is not the best environment for troubleshooting problems where the smallest detail may be of great importance. When something does not work, the first thing I want do is go to the command prompt to see if I can get an an error message to point me in the correct direction for a solution. Failing that, I check my system logs to look for a hint of what broke or why.

Troubleshooting problems should not be considered a regular part of day to day computer use, and should not be an integral part of the user environment. If it is, I think that says something about the operating system being used and begs the thought that something is wrong with its basic design.
