Mandriva Linux 2006: Booting problem with Graphics

After a long interner search, I have fixed up the following problem (just before reading Glenn's response. Thanx Glenn!). I hope it is one of the best options for a linux idiot. It is given below for other linux idiots who face similar problems:

- Boot in falsesafe mode. It will directly take u root in text console.
- Type the following command

$mcc (then just press enter)

mcc stands for mandriva control center. The $mcc command will open an ncrurse based menu. Follow the following link on that menu:

display -> option -> no

thats all. It disables Xorg from starting automatically at booting. After this, rebot the system. Now it must boot in text console if there is no other problem.

Hi,
I installed, through my friend, Mandriva Linux 2006 in my Compaq Presario v6000 laptop. But graphics (kde) could not be made default at booting. So, after login, I use the command $startx to go to graphics mode.

But recently I have done a mistake. Through "configure your computer" (or something like that) in desktop mode, I set the option "boot with deault graphics" (or something like that) expecting it may work. But now the machine is unable to boot, it remains hanging in opening graphics. Can anybody suggest how I can disable this option of default graphics, so that I can use $startx as I was doing till yesterday. Well, I can go to text console through the "failure" mode option at booting.

Thanks
Dilip

If you boot in normal mode and start pressing "I" before the Mandriva "blue lettering" you should be able to answer the prompts of what you want loaded during the start up sequence.

The blue lettering appears after the hand over of the boot sequence from the initrd (ram drive) to the current installed start-up scripts.

(edit), the gui is the last one.

This way you can edit the xorg.conf file with vim (or vi) and change things once you have logged in.

A better way would be to type in the konsole/terminal "drakxconf", with out the quote marks.

This will give you access to quite a few config applets, but just stick to the "Display" config.

Make sure you test the config after each setting change. It could be a simple error from not being able to set the screen size or the refresh rate is too high.

Give that a go. (the "I" option, that is) I usually have to tap the key a few times to get the timing right.

Hope this helps, cheers from OZ, Glenn
