Mandriva 2009 home/root folder access
 

I've just installed Mandriva 2009 free on my OLD Inspiron Laptop.
(466 Mhz) and one gig of memory. It runs surprisingly well.

The problem: for the life of me I cannot find the access ICON for my home/root folders. There is nothing on the desktop. I've clicked on
just about everything, obviously not the right thing!

What am I missing??

If you installed a KDE desktop, open up Konqueror. This is the standard file manager for KDE. On the left side of the Konqueror screen, you will see some icons. One is for /home and one is for the root file system '/'. You can navigate around easily with Konq. If you do not see the vertical split with the nav panel on the left, press F9, that will turn it on and off alternately.

There are many programs available for viewing and managing files. My favorite is Xfe. You can find it in the repos.

In KDE4 the default file manager is dolphin. Available in the menu in Tools/System Tools.

If you are looking for a "My Documents" icon, you will not find one if you have KDE as your Desktop Environment (the Mandriva default). However, if you really want one, you can create that functionality for your self:

1. (KDE3) ALT+Click an empty part of your Desktop

1. (KDE4) ALT+Click the Desktop folder view window

2. In the pop-up menu select "Create New ..." > "Link to Location".

3. Enter "My Documents" in the "File Name" text entry field.

4. Click the navigation button (to the right of the "Link to location (URL)" text entry field) - it should default to your Documents folder, then click the "OK" button.

You should now have a "My DOcuments" icon in your Desktop folder view window with a gear icon.

You can choose a different icon to display for your "My Documents" Desktop icon:

ALT+Click your new "My Documents" icon, then in the resulting pop-up menu select "Properties".

In the Properties dialogue, click the "?" icon button (top right).

Click the drop down list to the right of the "System Icons" radio button and select "Places".

Choose a folder icon you like, then press the "OK" button to save your configuration.

You can choose any available icon from any of the categories in the drop sown list you want (I use the green folder icon here).
