Mandriva 2007 Won't Install
 

I'm quite noobish when it comes to Linux. I'm currently a Windows user. After reading up a bit on Linux, I've decided to install it along with windows. Now, after downloading all 4 cds (a frustration full saga due to wireless connection), I burned the 1st one which is supposed to boot when the system is restarted. Just to check of everything works, I decided to restart with the CD inside (of course). As the boot passed the Intel Pentium 4 screen, I became worried... The all familiar windows loading screen appeared. A hit the table angrily and braced myself for another shot at it. This time, I burned the boot.iso image. Full of hope, I restarted the computer. Again, same results. I hit the computer, threw a marker at the floor (namely the one I used to label the CDs) and decided to go for one last attempt. I created a bootable floppy. I assume you can guess the rest by yourself.
So now, I'm sitting here, frustrated, writing this message, and hoping some one will be kind enough to answer quickly. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or how the problem can be fixed?

Check the cd, if you cannot see files and folders (only a single file) you haven't burnt the disc correctly.

If you can see files and folders, have you set your system to boot from cd in your bios?

Is there a key you can press at startup to choose where you want to boot from?

1. I did burn correctly and I did check it to see if it's ok.
2. The BIOS is set to boot from CD (I reinstalled windows 2 or 3 days ago AND rechecked yesterday).

So... Any other problems with what I'm doing? Is my computer just stupid?

Does the first cd autorun under windows? There are instructions on the first cd to help you create a bootable floppy.

If you are still certain that there's no fault with the cd's you have burned, I would suggest you download the Mandrive One cd and see if you can boot off that.

If successfull then there is most definately something wrong with the cd's.

I had a problem like this before, it turned out to be the drive having problems reading from certain types of discs.

I think you can still download dvd decrypter. after you install it just right click on the iso, you will get a menu that includes burn with dvd decrypter. Just follow the defaults it will burn properly. You could also check the md5 sums. I'm sure a tool exists for windowse to do this.

Hi, newcomer to linux having problem installing mandriva 2007 from linux magazine dvd. I have created a boot disk as per instructions and that allows me to set installation going, but when it moves the process to the cdrom drive I get a message,'your cpu does not support long mode, use a 32bit distribution'the linux installation is going onto a 'clean' pc, with no other operating system installed on it.I have also tried a network install with the same result. My pc is a viglen genie, with pentium 3, 12gig hard drive, ati rage 128 pro, card. and I think a 1.3 g, processor with 256 mb ram. I get the same error message with 64 or 32 bit install. I have tried asking what long mode is, but no-one locally seems to have heard of it. any help explaining where a complete beginner to linux can learn the basics will be most welcome.

This is a common issue with system that have (relatively) new motherboards and Sata HD(s). I found this impossible to resolve when I was testing Mandriva 2006; it's only Mandriva 2007.1 (beta version) that was finally able to find both the cd /dvd reader and the HDs. Of course, your case may be different but you would have to tell some more about your hardware first in order to find out.

I started with DVD boot, after secleting language, preceed, it loads the linux kernel to 100%. then, the screen flickers once, and,,,,,, just leave me a blank! that means computer is working but shows nothing but a full screen black color. HD and CDROM not reading or anything else. system halts. no matter how i change the settings (disable APTI, remove the NIC, even remove HD), it's all the same.

Even tried text mode. with 'noauto', it stopped at

Initializing cryptographic API
io (somthing i fogot)
io (somthing i fogot)
io (somthing i fogot)
io cfg registered

and halted right here.


Now the question: how should I install this Mandriva 2007?

I've used several versions of Mandriva on other older computers.

Found the solution to the long mode error message, and now have mandriva up and running. I entered the bios settings and switched the first choice for booting from the floppy disk to the dvd rom drive. Thanks to all who sent suggestions.

check ur BIOS
 

hi friend i suggest u to check ur BIOS setting
in that go BOOT OPTIONS
then select firsgt boot device as ur ATP (cd/dvd) drive
n the second as ur hard drive this may work try once
