Mandriva 2006 Live hanging on Toshiba Satallite Pro L20

Hi all

I've had a scan through the forums, and don't think this has been asked before. If it has, my apologies - and please point me to the relevant thread...

I'm in slooow transit from Windows to Linux, and having read a favourable review of Mandriva in the latest issue of TUX, want to give it a go. I've downloaded and burnt the Mandriva 2006 Live CD.

My problem: on booting my Toshiba Satellite Pro L20 laptop from the live CD, the progress bar screen comes up, the progress bar completes and then the screen goes black and the whole machine simply hangs. No response to keyboard or mouse. The only way to restore control is to hard power off.

Has anyone come across this? Any ideas?

Thanks

Adrian

This is a very common problem. There is a bug with some nvidia and ati graphics chips. The way around is to either get the mandriva updates from easyurpmi or install the nvidia/ati drivers. You will have to do this from the command line. If you need help with it post back.

Having said that as your using the live version I'm not sure if that will work. I don't know if you can install things like that. I presume you can though. Does the mandriva live have a failsafe mode? If so that will get you booted, but won't launch X (the graphics). Your system is currently freezing at that point right?

Thanks!

Thanks for that. I'll try booting the live CD up on my old tower PC. I've had a couple of other versions of Linux running on that so with any luck...

That way I can get a feel for the distro without fiddling with the graphics issue. If I like it, I'll go back to the laptop and your info will be most useful.

Many thanks, much appreciated.

Hi

I am a total newbie but I am pretty sure this will sort out my Mandriva and Toshiba problem. Can some tell me what I need to download, from where and how to install it?

Many thanks in advance

Dave
