Mandriva 2006 hangs at odd times.

I'm trying my first experience with Linux as a web server. I'm used to an XP/Apache environment, but want to give Linux a spin as I believe it's a more secure system.

After repeated attempts to install, I'm about ready to give up. Here's what I'm experiencing:

Dell PowerEdge SC420

I can get all the way past disc partitions, formatting, etc, but when it gets to the actual installation of files, I will get an error message that a paticular package didn't install properly, along with a choice to proceed or not. It's always a different package each time I start all over.

After frustration with that, I decided to check the option to copy the source CD's to the hard drive thinking that it would maybe help things out.... Disc one always copies with no problems, disc two copies part way, and then hangs. Sometimes, a third of the way, sometimes half, sometimes, two thirds... I can always tell that it's going to fail because the CD drive will start to quiet down. Then I know it's curtains...

What is going on?

Thanks

Dave

IŽd hazard a guess that the drive is not reading the disk . They get a fine line on them from being compressed . Clean it thoroughly but as a last resort buy the current issue of Linux Magazine and get the DVD.$13 AUD

Your installation discs could be corrupt or there is a problem with your cd/dvd drive. If you downloaded the isos yourself, make sure the md5sums match those on the Mandriva mirrors. If the md5sums are ok and your cd media is fine, then your problem is mostly likely hardware related.

Thanks for the input. I suspect that it's CD#2 that has an issue. When I tried the install again two more times, both time, the error had to do with trying to install Firefox. So this time, I chose to ignore, and the rest of the install went fine (as far as I can tell).

My Dell only has a CD and not a DVD. I'm going to have to do something about that!

As far as the md5sums with the source, could you explain how to do that?

Thanks!

To check the md5sums, do something like
Code:
$md5sum filename.iso
The md5sum will be printed to the screen and you can compare these to the ones on the mirrors of the iso that you downloaded.
