I'm also really eager to await the new Mandriva 2006, but we gotta be patient because there are still some bugs, as I posted earlier. It didn't work too well with my Dell Inspiron 600m laptop. I'm giving it a try on my desktop today.

My guess would be that Mandriva 2006 will arrive in late October/November.

Actually it was supposed to be released tomorrow(unofficial sources), the 15th of September 2005, but i think one more RC is due(again unofficial sources ;) ), so maybe the end of this month. There is supposed to be a Roadmap(if it can be called that) for 2006 at qa.mandriva.com or qa.mandrivalinux.com, but i cant access either.

it works well in desktop

I just tried installing it on my desktop right now and it didn't fair too well. In fact, I couldn't even get to the install! It just stopped at the Languages selection after I clicked English and clicked Next. I let it sit there for 10 minutes. Still stuck. LOL I guess I'll wait for RC2.

the installation is smooth and connection to internet by LAN and wireless are all setup properly without problem.

I've never been able to access qa.mandriva.com, they have some nice guides/howtos there. My ISP must be blocking it or something...

It looks like while the first link shows the same dates for RC1 and RC2, the second link above shows RC2 is released today.

I see some servers (bind) in the tuxmachine package list, but the comment from MDV that " Some servers are not included in the Free edition anymore and in the powerpack, only in the powerpack+" worries me, and this is the first I've heard of it. I'm assuming it's a misleading comment, at least I hope since I won't pay powerpack+ prices just to get apache and other basic server SW.

Also, does anyone know why MDV sticks with LILO and hasn't upgraded to Grub??

Well, just because it works on yours doesn't mean it'll work on everyone elses computer. Maybe your computer is special. ;) It didn't work on my laptop and it didn't work on my desktop. That much I do know. I'm sure they'll polish things out with the final release.

Smart Package is working !!
 

Everything is working!! I can't believe it. I installed smart package from the original 3 CD's by basically re-installing the software and selecting it as one of the installed packages. I had to create a shortcut to the package which I did using the file search function under Konqueror. I had to figure out how to assign an Icon the command "smart --gui" and make it run as root (otherwise it won't work properly). All if my packages updated fine and I can add software at will. It is great. I am very happy to see Linux getting to this point. I have to learn the Linux file system layout, that is a bit more complicated that Windows. Knowing where the program files are located is a new to me but I am learning. Any helpful hints would be appreciated.

As it stands now, it is almost there for the average computer user. Mandriva did a truly outstanding job. This distro runs perfectly on my HP ze4560 laptop. No fiddling or tinkering. I just have to learn how to upgrate my OpenOffice to the beta 2.0 release.

The package manager built into Mandriva is not working, i don't know if it has been intentionally disabled in the free version, it does not work at all.

I am going to fiddle with Wine now because one of my programs is only available in Windows format (Statgraphics Centurion) and there is no good substitute in Linux or Mac. It is another awesome piece of software.

Go to the bottom for the United States FTP sites. Most of them have the new RC2 (.5). Look at the dates as they were all added today (9/14). I'm downloading them now
