Mandriva 2006 + ATI drivers?

I can't get the ATI drivers to work on my Mandriva 2006 system. I think the reason is that the ATI drivers are made for x.org 6.8.0, but mdk2006 comes with x.org 6.9.0.

Here's an excerpt from my Xorg.0.log:
Code:

(II) Module fglrx: vendor="FireGL - ATI Technologies Inc."
        compiled for 6.8.0, module version = 8.18.6
        Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 0.7
[R200Setup] X version mismatch - detected X.org 7.0.-1.900, required X.org 6.8.0.0
(II) UnloadModule: "fglrx"
(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/fglrx_drv.o
(EE) Failed to load module "fglrx" (module requirement mismatch, 0)
(II) LoadModule: "mouse"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/input/mouse_drv.so
(II) Module mouse: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
        compiled for 6.8.99.900, module version = 1.0.0
        Module class: X.Org XInput Driver
ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 0.4
(II) LoadModule: "kbd"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/input/kbd_drv.so
(II) Module kbd: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
        compiled for 6.8.99.900, module version = 1.0.0
        Module class: X.Org XInput Driver
ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 0.4
(EE) No drivers available.

Fatal server error:

Any ideas what I could do?

I have an idea: use xorg 6.8.0.

Download the most recent drivers from the ATI site. They may take some hand tweaking, as was true in my case, but they work with 6.9.0, as I bring you this post from it:D

What kind of hand tweaking? I did use the latest driver (version 8.18.6 from 10/12/2005) but I can't get it to work.

When you do 'fglrxconfig' basically answer what it already has in the brackets. The part I had to configure were the refresh rates and the resolution for my laptop LCD, since it didnt detect them on its own.

Don't ask me why, but it's working now. I uninstalled the RPM and reinstalled again using the executable. This time it correctly detected xorg 6.9.0 and after running fglrxconfig and rebooting I have 3D. :) My guess is that I didn't have the correct kernel sources when I tried it the same way yesterday.

Yeah, sorry, that was one other thing I forgot to add. You have to reboot apparently for it to use the fglrx.ko driver. Stopping and starting X isnt enough for it to unload the Mesa libraries I guess:confused:

hi ,

It worked for me too. I uninstalled the rpm and installed the dkms package and then reinstalled the
ati run package.

Krishna

Hi,
I think I've got the same problem with Mandriva and I can not find any way to solve it. Could you tell me which rpm's exactly you uninstalled and which exec's you have installed? I would be grateful,
take care!

Hey,
I am on mandriva 2006, fglrx 8.19.10 (rpm)

i get the same problem about x.org 7 mismatch,
ive got my kernel source installed, n tried installing dkms (not sure wat it is but someone said they isntalled it), tried manually budling the module and insatlling that
but it would apear i cannot get it to either bulid a moduel for my x.org, or cant get it to accept the version

thx

Had the same issue on my Gentoo box, with the "-1", but seems that on my Mandriva install I had no problems whatsoever... Just used the latest drivers (.run flavor, not the rpm) and used the xorg.cfg I'm using for a few months now. Worked like a charm. The downside seems to be the lack of 3D acceleration in both distros when using Xorg 7.0.-1. I guess have to look a bit more into this...

SomeGuy1337 12-10-2005 04:30 AM

i hvant tired the auto installer but i did get the rpm to work.

i downloaded some packages found:
http://www.tux3d.org/fglrx/Mandriva/2006/i586

notably dkms-fglrx which compiled something on my kernel which i think fixed the problem
(i installed any other 'fglrx' named packages but i do not think i needed them i think they were redundent and came with the ati fglrx rpm)

after installing this package i reinstalled the ati rpm
*note that i had to restart before it would load fglrx module, restarting X would not work)

i have 3d accleration and got some games to work fine like armagetron which is native,
but having problems wiht games crashing in cedega and also quake 4 linux demo would constantly crash :\

so i would avoid xorg 6.9/7 untill these driver issues are resolved if you are a linux n00b like myself.

ATI drivers with x.org 6.9.0

I had same problem, and mange to fix by running xf86cfg

as root

xf86cfg

and then quit and save all

Xwindows should work
