Mandriva 2006 and Laptop Hardrive

Hi! Im quite new to linux and I wanted to ask something to all you guys/gals who installed mandriva to their laptop. I have a little problem well I think it is anyway, when my computer is idle it seems I can hear noise coming to my hardrive. But when I do something (open menus, programs) It disappears and back again. Is this normal? Ive uninstalled Mandriva and tried Suse and Ubuntu but I dont have this problem. Or is it a problem? Is this a known bug or something? I have an 80Gb hardrive a intel centrino 2 ghz processor, 512 of ram ati x600 vid card.

It's probably the resource hogging Kat search utility. I'd recommend going to remove programs and uninstalling it
