Mandrakelinux 10.1
I recently downloaded mandrake/mandrivia 10.1, My computer is 10 years old. It runs a Pentium MMX and 32 MB of RAM. I can get it to bootloader then ity comes to, I choose Linnux or failsafe and it says:
"......................................... Bios Data Check succesful" Then reboots, What could be the problem? I have so far tryed about 6 different forms of linux, and none get to the setup screen except for Ubuntu and Mandrake. Please help me. GH0 P.S. Sorry I am fairly new to linux so keep it simple. |
Why don't you try to use a lighter distribution like Puppy Linux ? Not only will it load faster, but you can try it running straight from the CD and then install to the hard drive if it fits you.

I dont really want to compile anything though. :(

Not sure if Puppy Linux will work fine.
This fellow has only 32MB of RAM. The puppy Linux CD hosts 60 MB, which is ultimately copied to the CD..and yes, you can remove the CD once it is loaded. So I am not sure whether GH0 will be able to even run Puppy Linux. If he is able to get some more RAM, it would be a good thing. |
But if he install puppy linux to the hard drive he'd end up with a fast running distro which won't take even 100mb's of hard disk space.
Also, you don't have to compile anything, just download the ISO file, burn it properly and start the computer with the cd-rom inside (and set the cd drive as first boot unit in the BIOS). |

I guess I could get it to the hard drive. And me finding more RAM for that computer will not happen for two reasons: 1) Have no money 2) I dont know where to find enough RAM for a 10 year old machine. |

As this computer is about 10 years old, you will be needing the outdated SD RAM. The SD RAMs are not only slower than the DDR RAMs but costly as well. :( I would recommend you installing Puppy Linux to the Hard drive. Puppy on the Hard-Drive. But remember. This is a work in progress. So not sure if it is gonna work for sure. |
