i ve upgraded my kde3.2 to kde 3.3then i restarted i cannot see kde at the login anymore so i chose gnome .Then i upgraded gnome 2.6 to 2.8 and restated ,i cannot see the usual login ,i just saw a login with loin and password no desktop to choose and when i enter my login details and enter it will wait for 112mn and come back to the login.pls help me i love linux but with this i always boot in windows..help!!!!!!!!!!!

It sounds like you may have changed the display manager to gdm instead of kdm or mdkkdm.

Check to see what it is set to in /etc/X11/

i type kde at the shell prompt and i had this error:

Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
at least one device section is required
(EE) Problem parsing the config file
(EE)Error parsing the config file
Fatal server error :
so screen found

Then i view the the content of /etc/X11/xorg.conf by typing "less /etc/X11/xorg.conf " but there nothing in the xorg.conf and also there is nothing in the "XF86Config" file
plz help !!!!!!!!!

On the text console ( [CTRL][ALT][F1] ) log in as root.

Then type

service dm stop

It should respond with OK

Now type

XFDrake


And configure your X windows display and mouse.

TEST whatever you try, and make sure you see the rainbow test screen before you exit and save.

Then

service dm start
