Mandrake works great!!! A few questions about Java and Bittorrent

1. How do you install Java Runtime Environment via RPM? I did but the command "java <app>.jar" still isnt recongnized(sp, I'm dumb) by bash even as root. And how do you run bittorrent without the gui (text based through the terminal)?

This is dangerous territory!!!

I'll try my best to explain, but I'm at work so I don't have Linux in front of me.

1) go to www.java.com

2) do a manual download and get the Linux SELF EXTRACTING file, NOT the RPM.

3) untar that file to somewhere on your directory. For me, I just put it in /home/myname/java

4) and um, I don't have linux in front so I'll have to get back to you. But basically you just need to create a symlink to your browser plugins folder. YOu using Firefox or Mozilla?

BitTorrent via console:

go get the bittorent client from:
http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/download.html

Get the Python source, TAR file

Untar that to your home directory

(make sure you have Python installed)

run in console by doing this:

./btdownloadheadless.py filename.torrent

The torrent will download to your BitTorrent directory.

Hi.

I installed Java in my system without problems. But I can't enable Java plugin in Firefox (0.9.3).

I created a symbolic link by typing:

ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_04/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so .

In the plugins directory of Firefox.

But it just prevent Firefox to run. It just kill the browser without reasons. So I removed the link and Firefox started to work again (but without Java support)

I did the same thing with Mozilla 1.7.2 and it worked.

I really want to enable Java in Firefox. Could you help me?

Thanks.

Why did you install an old version of java? The current version, IIRC, is j2re1.4.2_05. Go here and re-download it again. As Micro420 posted, download the self-extracting file and follow the instructions for installation.

Now, your symlink "ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_04/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so" seems to be off... it should point to "/usr/java/j2re1.4.x_xx/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so".

And, if you're looking for a BT client, give Azureus a try. I never have/had problems with it and it comes with a nice interface.

Thank you estatik. You were right, the symbolic link was wrong. After I changed it from .../ns610/... to .../ns610-gcc32/... it worked fine. And I made a typo, sorry. I installed j2re 1.4.2_05.

Thank you again.
