Question Mandrake V10 Install partitioning error. system hang

HI

I am having problems with Mandrake 10 installation. I have a AN78NX deluxe motherboard with 2 identical Seagate 80gb HD. (These didnt work with 9.2 as the kernel didnt seem to support the SATA drives.) I go through the setup options (have to use a boot floppy as it won't boot from LG CD drive or Sony DVD RW drive, Knoppix 3.3 does). Get to partitioning the disks and I switch to expert mode, clear all on both disks. Select Auto allocate and then Server. It spreads the /, swap, /usr and /var onto the first disk and /home and /tmp onto the second disk. Then I try to let it format them. Here is where the problems start.

1) It randomly hangs when formatting a partition. It can be any partition it doesnt seem to mind. By hang I mean the mouse freezes, keyboard no longer works, even the eject button on the CD drive doesn't seem to want to do anything.
b) I managed to get past the Disk config once, selected it to be a server running Web, Mysql, File server and ticked off multimedia, everything else left to default. 5 minutes of install left and it hangs in the same way as described above.

Now my natural inclination is to say its a SATA problem, given the number of chipsets etc the kernel has to support and from my experience with 9.2, but any thoughts are appreciated. I don't really want to go out and buy two slower ATA disks to replace these SATA ones.

I know the SATA disks are good as when I had the 9.2 issues I went out and downloaded a trial copy of Win2003 server so I could run something with the SATA disks.(dodges tomatoes) Of course my 180 days are up now and I need to put a proper file sharing system in place running SAMBA.

All help greatly received

phil

Update: Swapped the two disks round on the SATA channels and system installed fine. No idea why as they are the same two disks. Perhaps fdisk didnt get rid of the mbr's properly?

A little different

Glad you were able to swap the drives and have it work.

Same mobo, AMD 1170+ ( just read blackviper's rant ... ) on a relatively new Maxtor 80. Due to a small crisis on another machine, I have been swapping drives and no doubt is part of the problem with the partition.

Go to install Mandrake 10.0 on hda1 ( 20GB ) and ( after having to do the Disk 2/1 shuffle ) and it seriously hangs at

Please wait

Formatting partition hda1

To the point where I have to reset the computer ....

You mentioned fdisk ...

Tried again using the F1 linux noapic nolapic

Did the 2/1 shuffle

Went with existing partitions

Deleted all mount points except hda1

It actually went through the partition process without hanging ...

Rant during installation - The Mercury in retrograde thing --- It sure seems to me that I have had more computer related,, opportunities to learn more deeply about this most excellent collaboration .... lately Ghost in the Machine kind of times

Next is the dreaded lilo problem ...

Probably with all the moving around, I messed up a mbr. What has happened in the past is that when lilo loads, it ends in +++ Kernel Panic ++++ .

For the bootloader, his time I selected floppy so lillo would be written to a disk

Finished the installation sequence

Kept the disk in

Rebooted

And success .. we have achieved login

Seemed like isolating the partition and using a disk for a mbr worked.

Later, I will figure out how to move the mbr off the disk and into the computer ..

It seems a million miles away and it get a little closer everyday ...
