Mandrake Update nightmare (9.1 & 9.2)

Using both Mandrake 9.1 and 9.2, I'm having serious problems with this utility.

In 9.1, after an basic install including all default package groups, the Update utility spent ages removing a list of programs, then failed to installed the update due to missing files. After rebooting, XWindows refused to start. I tried again, with only the default package selection, and the same thing happened.

I performed a clean install of Mandrake 9.2 with the same package selection (only the major groups for Workstation/Development/Server etc), and after an apparently sucessful update, KDE & Gnome were both missing lots of packages and graphics, then I got another failed boot into XWindows.

So here I am again, another clean install of Mandrake 9.2, and now I'm scared to use Mandrake Update for fear that it will screw up my system again.

Any ideas why this is happening??

Many thanks in advance,
Bawbag.

Try updating your "Software media manager" it may be looking at a website for 9.1 instead of 9.2 and updating the wrong version

My current update source is set to:-

ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/Linux/distrib...dates/9.2/RPMS

Seems fine to me. I'm in the UK and it provides me with a fast connection.

If by "missing lots of packages and graphics" you mean they disappeared from the menu, then open konsole and type "update-menus -v" (will appear to hang, just hit enter when it does). There's a bug with RPM database locking that updating will fix, but not before biting you. Anyway, I've updated everything using their utility without any probs (except menu bug, that is). No ideas on your X prob...

Lightbulb

When you attempt to do an update, under "Maximum Information" do you have your "medium" as update_source..?

The only thing I can think of is to change your ftp site and see if that helps. here is one to try that works for me:

ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/linux/Ma...dates/9.2/RPMS

If I can think of anything else.. I'll holler.

Good luck!:
