Mandrake too slow

HI everyone.

I have installed Mandrake 9.2 and it runs very slow. I mean, i open the browser and it takes 3 minutes to open, and then when i add a website it has another 3 minutes to load the site. And the harddrive is running like crazy, it doesn't stop, and finally freeze......even the mouse.

My question is, is there any application (like task manager in windows) to monitor the performance?

I am newby, please help me.

Why is running too slow?

Thanks a lot.

I have been looking around the Mandrake, i found the memory is used complety...why?

It only shows 96 MB and i have 256 MB, and i dont have SWAP SPACE (damn)

How can i set the whole memory?
Why is taking only part of the memory?
How do i create SWAP space?

WHAT IS SWAP SPACE?

Thanks a lot

How did you install Mandrake at all without a swap partition?

A swap partition is needed just like the temp folder is needed in M$.
It is used to hold data temporarily. Since you have 256mb of memory you should have made a 512mb(or something close) swap partition.

Thats the whole reason your hard drive is thashing like that and the system is slow.

Since its a new install I would just reinstall makeing sure you make a swap partition in the prossess.

I suppose you have no sensitive data stored on your MDK install. So why not go back and install again? If you're slightly confused about partitioning just let the installer do it for you, you can basically let it auto-configure your partitions. However, what I normally do is create three partitions, I dont really need more than that. So on my 40GB hdd i have:

+ - 6GB mounted at / (root file system, dont get confused and think it is mounted at /root)

512MB for swap space mounted as /swap (you will not use this partition for storage of personal files, mandrake will use this to swap to disk like physical memory)

Then lastly I create a partition which uses the rest of my disk and it is mounted as /home. This parition can be used for storage of your personal files and things you download.

Cheers.

Do yourself a big favor and read the errata on their webpage...and by all means...get SWAP. :)

You do not need to reinstall to add swap you can reallocate some unused disk space and use for swap space. BTW 512mb is not needed for swap i have 256mb ram and only use 150mb swap.

Since its a new install and your just starting reinstalling is probobly the best way to go.
No you didn't need to reinstall in order to make a new partition and name it swap but by the time you read everything about it and did it you could have reinstalled and been onto your next little fix.

After you've been running awhile and have too much data to loose to a total reinstall you can go back and read how to make the partitions.

By the way

Welcome to Linux. Hope it does everything you need it to do.
