fancypiper 08-23-2003 10:55 AM

You can always get some cheap CDs.

I recommend the Easy urpmi config for Mandrake page to set your sources.

You didn't install the developmental packages? As root, command:
urpmi gcc
An Introduction to the Midnight Commander. You can install it by commanding:
urpmi mc

can't i just type in some ftp address? this seems so complicated

fancypiper 08-23-2003 11:33 AM

Are you wanting to download the installation CDs then?

Google search results for Mandrake downloads

Or, are you asking how to install over a network?

i just want to easily install some programs and i don't have the cd's availble right now and i don't want to dl them again

If you want other than the default settings, go to Easy urpmi config for Mandrake and configure your sources.

The urpmi mini-HOWTO will explain how to use it with the command line.

If you want to use the defaults, launch the Mandrake Control Center and go to the Software Management area;

yeah that's where software sources manager is. what i'm asking is if if i click add will an ftp address be enough or do i need to do more?

fancypiper 08-23-2003 02:09 PM

I can't remember. I couldn't figure out the gui in the Mandrake Control Center, so I went with the command line urpmi program.

I much prefer the command line proggies for managing my systems.

Software sources

A good source out there is from the Penguin Liberation Front (PLF).

URL: ftp://ftp.easynet.fr/plf/9.1

Relative path to synthesis/hdlist: hdlist.cz

Depending on what you want, it is most likely to be there. Unfortunately, sometimes it will have a few missing files and you'll have to find other sources but for the most part, it is good. After you set this source up, a simple "urpmi" command will do the job at installing what you want or you can use the GUI.

Hope this helps.

I don't understand why you don't just try and see. Typing in the ftp address should be enough. If not, do it from the command line using easy urpmi config (look at fancypiper's post).

I'd actually like to know an answer to this if it's what I think you're talking about. A friend of mine was trying to install some rpms from a mirror instead of the CDs because he suspected one of the CDs was bad. Tried to do the obvious stuff, but couldn't get the graphical installer to look at the site instead of asking for the cd.

I think we ended up just manually downloading the rpms and running them directly. (rpm -i [filename])

you guys probably forgot to deactivate or remove the CDs from the sources manager - I forget it all the time myself.

Hi Rom Raptor. Here is the stuff you need:
1st- go to the link mentioned above: Easy urpmi config for Mandrake and select the sources yo need. You'll select "main", "contrib" and "updates" and from the dropdown list, choose the ones the closer to your location the better. Let's say for exemple the Chalmer's ones (from Göteborg). Optionally (but recommended) check the "external add-ons" source plf and source texstar. Source jpackage.free is up to you.
Click on "proceed to step 3". You'll get the output:
3) TYPE THIS IN A CONSOLE AS A ROOT:
urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://knight.zarb.org/pub/plf/9.1 with hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia main ftp://ftp.chl.chalmers.se/pub/Linux/.../Mandrake/RPMS with ../base/hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia contrib ftp://ftp.chl.chalmers.se/pub/Linux/...1/contrib/RPMS with ../../i586/Mandrake/base/hdlist2.cz
urpmi.addmedia --update updates ftp://ftp.chl.chalmers.se/pub/Linux/...ates/9.1/RPMS/ with ../base/hdlist.cz
urpmi.addmedia texstar ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/dist...drake/9.1/rpms with hdlist.cz
Easy? Yes
What's all that mess? Youll' find for ever single source its location in the web and its related hdlist.cz that contains the complete list of all rpm packages managed by this source and their properties and many more things.
2nd- To add a given source you can opt two ways:
Connect to internet and in a console convert yourself into root: su (intro) password (intro) and then type, in this exemple for the "main" source:
urpmi.addmedia main ftp://ftp.chl.chalmers.se/pub/Linux/.../Mandrake/RPMS with ../base/hdlist.cz (intro)
and magically everything goes automatically, indeed urpmi takes care of everything. It takes for a long time if you are in Dial-Up!. When finished, you can add the other sources, one by one recommended.
You can do exactly the same job in Mandrake Control Center>Software Manager>Software Sources Manager>Add>choose FTP Server, put its name, in path cut and paste from ftp...to....RPMS and in related synthesis/hdlist path put everything after "with", this is: ../base/hdlist.cz and accept!
When adding "updates" in MDK CC don't forget to swich from FTP Server to Security Updates.
With such an assortment of software you'll get almost everyting you need and easyly installable from the MDK Control Center, so take a time browsing this immense data base in "installing software packages". Good luck!
