Mandrake/ltmodem question

I had Mandrake on my computer. I got pissed at it and un-installed it. The problem I had was that everytime I installed the correct ltmodem drivers I would keep getting, "Sorry we only support 2.4 kernels and above." I know I had the right drivers. I also made sure that I got the ones with the .mdk extention on them. I searched through forums and google and found out others have had the same problem. I tried the solutions given to them and nothing. It still told me the same thing. I must have missed something somewhere. Well I plan on installing it again. Has anyone found the answer to this problem? I like Suse, but I would also like to Use Mandrake 10.0 official with my dial up, at least until Cable DSL is avaible here in the next several months. Any help is appreciated.

if it is conexant this site has drivers for linux:www.linuxant.com/modemident look in linuxquestions.org/howto/winmodem.php for support.

I did that before. But I tried again in case I did something wrong. Didn't work. What I don't understand is why this modem works great with Suse 9.1 but I can't get it to work with Mandrake. I followed these instructions from LQ's winmodem section.

"(please read the README, and also make sure you have your kernel source on the harddrive)

cd /home/peace
tar -zxvf ltmodem-8.26a9.tar.gz
./build_module
./ltinst2
./autoload
insmod lt_modem
insmod lt_serial"

It can't find It_modem and lt_serial. When I link them in the /dev/modem directory I still get the same thing.

First here is my scanModem results then following will be what Suse detects.

"scanModem in Mandrake"
UPDATE=2004_Aug_15
ONLY use scanModem downloaded as: http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/scanModem.gz

./scanModem should ONLY be run within a Linux/UNIX partition.
If within a MicroSoft/DOS partition, abort with Ctrl-C now !!!
Copy scanModem.gz to your Linux partition and restart.

webwolf70; the 1st 5lines of the mdk indicates the howto, closely follow those instructions see if they do the trick. also open that site as indicated it may also provide added tips & tricks on howto for that ltmodem.

Hi, lt_modem and lt_serial are not the drivers you need for MDK10,you need ltmodem.ko and ltserial.ko.Have a look at the ltmodem site:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pack...em/kernel-2.6/

These are the instructions I followed. The only thing I couldn't do in Konsole was,"Copy them to /lib/modules/`uname -r`/other/ dir" It kept telling me the -r command wasn't found. I copied them by dragging and dropping them into the folder.

---------------------
2. HOWTO build

You may need to create /dev/ttyLT0 if you haven't used 2.4 version
of driver. Just do:
a. mknod --mode=0640 /dev/ttyLT0 c 62 64
b. Change owner and group owner to match /dev/ttyS0
(Debian users: set group to dialout)
c. Create symlink /dev/modem to it ('ln -s /dev/ttyLT0 /dev/modem')

Edit KERNEL_DIR variable in Makefile to reflect your 2.6 kernel dir.
Then just run make. You will get ltmodem.ko & ltserial.ko.
Copy them to /lib/modules/`uname -r`/other/ dir and
run depmod -a.

Edit your modprobe.conf to load ltserial (not lt_serial)
for /dev/ttyLT0.

My modprobe.conf contains following lines:
alias /dev/modem ltserial
alias char-major-62 ltserial
alias /dev/tts/LT0 ltserial
-----------------------------------

I added these to my modprobe.conf, then I edited the third line to,"alias /dev/ttyLT0 ltserial"

I also changed ltserial to ltserial.ko, I changed /dev/modem to /dev/modem/ttyLT0 I also changed the third line to alias /dev/ttyS0/com1
I tried several different combinations. Each time I tried the following to connect.

I then tried to connect.

1 - I go to the Mandrake control center. Click on new connection.

2 - I Choose modem connection.

3 - If I choose Lucent Microelectronics|LT WinModem it tells me, "sorry we support only 2.4 and above kernels."
So I choose Manual.

4 - I then choose /dev/modem (when this hasn't worked I went down the whole list and tried ttyS0/com1 through ttyS7/com8)

5 - Then it tells me to select provider, It doesn't have anything for the United State, the default it chooses is Austria, Simon Media.

6 - I put in my account info and authentication default is PAP/CHAP, I have also tried script-based, terminal-based, PAP and CHAP.

7 - Dialup: IP parameters - Automatic

8 - Dialup: DNS parameters - Automatic

9 - Dialup: IP parameters Gateway - Automatic

10 - Do you want to start the connection at boot? No

11 - Do you want to connect to the internet now? Yes

Please wait, testing your connection.......

The system doesn't seem to be connected to the internet. Try to reconfigure your connection.

And KPPP says it is unable to open modem.

Now if I try comfiguring it with /dev/ttys0/com1 it recognizes it and says it is open. But does nothing.

The rest of my modprobe.conf file is this:

alias autofs autofs4
alias sound-slot-0 snd-via82xx
install scsi_hostadapter /sbin/modprobe sata_via; /bin/true
install snd-via82xx /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd-via82xx && { /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss; /bin/true; }
install usb-interface /sbin/modprobe usb-uhci; /sbin/modprobe ehci-hcd; /bin/true
remove snd-via82xx { /sbin/modprobe -r snd-pcm-oss; } ; /sbin/modprobe -r --first-time --ignore-remove snd-via82xx

Of course I also have the ltserial ones included.

Any ideas?

I hope I am missing something simple.

webwolf,

It may be easier to purchase an external modem that is compatble with Linux. Or if you purchase a Best Data internal winmodem, they were able to provide the exact drivers for their winmodem as long as you could supply them with the exact build number on their chip.

You could try aertsb's post:
Mandrake 10 beta 2 and ltmodems.
Just put the above line in the search field.
If that does not work you can do it manually. As root in console input: insmod -f /lib/modules/2.6.xx/ltmodem/ltmodem.ko and insmod -f /lib/modules/2.6.xx/ltmodem/ltserial.ko.I am just running off my memory,so your's might be different.Run lsmod to check that the drivers are loaded and if they are and you have set up kppp ok you should be able to connect.
I used my lucent winmodem for over a year with great success, but buying a second hand Robotic 56k external for $25.00 was the way to go.
