Mandrake Instalation Problem
 

right, hi, im really new to linux

i boot the madrake 10.0 disc and press enter for installation

it comes up with all this writing, its all good

then it comes to this screen looks kinda like this



MANDRAKE 10.0 INSALLATION ---SOME DATE--- ---SOME TIMES----










(ALT-F1) for boot logs (ALT-F3) for ____ (ALT-F4) _____


somethign like that, i left it for a while (30 mins) just seing if it was doing anything, it didn't...


any ideas? thanks

Same here, except that my version says "10.1".

I am pretty new (read "completely green") to Linux, so it could very well be my problem is mere ignorance. (but with some reasonable computer experience still).

Hardware: (Laptop)
AMD 1.6 Ghz;
HDD 40 Gb
3 partitions, one for Win XP (very stable), the second for data, and the last one to try Linux.

Started by inserting the first CD. Clicked on the "install" button. System rebooted, and a very cute 2 buttons box appeared. I pressed enter. Progress bar when all the way to the end, rather fast. Then I got the black screen described by the other user (see post 1), with a couple messages about USB detection, then nothing happening. After a few minutes of nothing hapening, I started looking at the log. Last operation was a ATAPI time out.

I shut down the computer, took the disk out, reboot, open the CD in windows explorer, and find install guidelines (if anyone concerned is reading, I would suggest you show install guidelines on the splash page of the autorun). Anyway, reading the guidelines (not much explanations) I find out that some laptop require a boot diskette. So I create the said boot diskette as explained and reboot. Now the progress bar stops before completion, and a black screen appear saying "boot failed. Please insert another disk". all 3 disks give the same message.

I get back to the skimpy install file to find a clue. It suggests to try text mode. So, I do, with the same results (lack of). I try several other modes. no luck there either. I try to create different boot diskettes. No luck still.

What's next? (Aside from brigging my CDs and laptop to the shop with a angry look on my face - I can figure that one on my own.)

Try starting the install by booting from the second cd of the three-disc set. When the black screen appears it should start looking for CD No. 1. Just change CD's at this point. Also, if you press F1 when you get the first light blue screen, try typing alt0 or alt1 at the boot: prompt.

Ok, I am new to the whole Linux thing, I was having problems with the desktop I had (had to replace hard drive), I ordered Mandrake Linux 10 - but it took so long to come, that I ended up purchasing the Red Hat 9 Bible (with CD's), after trying repeatdly, I got it installed, and up and running- after Modem probs, etc...Anyway I finally received Mandrake 10- at least that's what the sticker says on the CD sleeve, and I boot from CD...everything seems to be going well..until I it starts to try to install...I keep getting the message...
"I can't access Mandrake installation CD from CDRom."
I tried changing all the discs......rebooting from each...and that's all I get...any ideas?

AMD 1700+ (1.4G)
Maxtor 60GB Hard Drive
I/O Magic CD R-W Drive

3 CD's Labeled Mandrake 1, 2, 3 + Bonus mnf? They are copies...could this be the problem?

Well, I didn't try the Bonus MNF disk.....I'll probably be back.

When I rebooted...all I got was Grub....My Redhat was gone...:( I think I'll just reinstall Red Hat, and leave it at that.

a black screen with white letters : GRUB_, but it won't you let you type anything in

nafan, i have tried that, and no sucess, and other idea's?

themule: the screen you describe sounds like the part where the installer checks your USB devices and general hardware.
One of the Alt + commands (can't remember which off the top of my head) should give you an install log.
Can you post the output of that here?

EDIT It's Alt + F4.

This may sound like a strange question, but....... If the cd drive is over a year old, has it been cleaned? Copied discs shouldn't make a difference if they were written correctly. I assume you used some sort of windows cd-writing program to either copy purchased cd's or write downloaded ISO files. if you did, did you get the program to verify the discs were burned ok?

For me it did work getting me through the black screen, and all the way until the next issue:

Right after the licence thing, I get the following message:

An error has occured. An erro has occured. No valid devices were found on which to create new file system. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem.

Clicking OK gives more of the same.

Ctrl+Alt+F1 gives a log with some errors:

perl: warning: Setting local failed
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings :

...
are supported on your system
perl: warning: Falling back to the stadard locale ("C")

I can type there but I have no clue what I should type

ALT+F2 gives me a command line:
DrakX version...
BusyBox ....

I do and I get the following commands:

I try a few, but with no results, except for "exit" wich remove the prompt

ALT+F3 gives me an erro log :

Alt+F4 gives me a list of:

looks to me like I have to find the /usr/bin/perl... thingy (where) and go from there.

I tried using DrakX command prompt to access the folder

I can cd my way through usr, bin but perl install is said to be a bad, bad directory (which I of course believe because it's preventing me to install linux ;-)

Advices needed. (for instance, what is the command to display the content of a directory in bloody DrakX?)

NB: I know I tend to give too much details, but I am green, so I am not sure what's important and what's not.

Update: My mistake, I had mistypped "perl-install", so I can actually access perl-install...just can't run or read or whatever the command is to display the file.

Mandrake 10 and CD Drive
 

It's a brand new CD drive...just bought it and installed it last weekend.

Copied CD's
 

I purchased them from someone...Newcastle Computers...or something like that I think.
