Mandrake incorrectly reporting HD size

When I try and install Mandrake Linux 9.1, using a normal installation, it says that my HD is 1.9 Gigabytes, when, in fact it's actually 8.3 Gigabytes. (A Maxtor 90840D6, according to the installer) If I install Mandrake, everything works fine, except I'm limited to 1.9 Gigs for installing Linux. Any ideas? if you need more info, you'll need to tell how to get it, as I'm new to Linux. Thanks.

really no ideas!! (newbie...)

but only a short note:
Win xp detects my 160mb HD like 130mb...
Mandrake 9.1 detects it correctly (164 gb!).
Linux 1 Windows 0...great!!!!

Maybe you partioned it to small... if you can access your first drive, just download to to their and run it in linux - and man your hd is small - with them being so cheap now it might be a good idea to upgrade.

Sounds like an error in the MBR or something with the LBA on the hard drive.
Windows see's it ok?
What type of formatting are you using?
Did you ever have an HPFS file system on it?
Need a wee bit of info.......
