Mandrake GUI Installer

I've been trying to get X windows working on my computer for ages, i've tryed debian gentoo, and now mandrake.

Before I start posting detailed info, i have a preliminary question.

During the installation of Mandrake the GUI is presented to me, but when I am finished installing and try to start the X Server, the monitor lights just blink.

So if i'm installing with the GUI, does that mean Im in x windows already ?

The thing is that when you start X, you are using the settings you chose during the install. I'm almost sure that you're choosing the wrong settings for the monitor. Get it working at 800x600 and then work your way up from there.

Is it a Dell Latitude? I never got Mandrake working on my Dell notebook. Suse, Slackware, and Vectorlinux worked on my laptop but RH, Mandrake and Fedora refused to work with the monitors with any settings ( I tried them all).
