mandrake freezes

Hello, i have this problem.

mdk 10.0 is working fine... until it freezes a bit:

i can still work, but if i do a 'ps aux', 'lsof', 'nmap', 'top' and any listing process tool, the list displays incomplete, and can't get back to prompt unless i close the terminal window and open another one; ctrl-c doesnt work when the incomplete list is displayed.

This happens when i'm online or offline. and is annoying me because when this happens, i can't reboot or shutdown. It stays forever after 'stoping display manager' i've noticed that the second process, right after display manager at shuting down stage is devfsd.

The same issue apperars changing to another terminal session with ctrl-alt-F1 and it happens an hour or 2 after using the system.

What i do is power off my pc and the next time i boot into mdk it says it was badly unmounted.
I realise i can damage the system this way, because it happens almost on a daily basis

Never had this problem with another distros or mdk versions

I noticed that when using kernel 2.6.3 I had some stability problems, but I just started using 2.4.25 and it runs like a dream again. I didn't even have to recompile nvidia drivers.

RockmanExe............

do you have an nvidia card & the nvidia drivers installed? if so, that could be the problem. if you do, post back & i'll give you a couple of options you can try in your xf86config-4 file.

Nope, no nvidia card, i've done many tests and now i've discovered it has something to do with mplayer; maybe a sound or graphic driver issue. If i open a video on mplayer and it crashes, causes to freeze terminal windows and the rebooting process as described above. I'll keep on researching, to narrow things even more. thanks for your replies

what version of mplayer & where did you get it? if you compiled your own version, check out This Thread & look for mine &/or doug_s's post on getting mplayer & it's codecs from the PLF.

I don't know about you guys, but I can't get any dvds to play with mandrake rpms or plf rpms. I always have to compile from source to get results...
