I've got a Sapphire 9800 non-pro. I just finished installing Mandrake 9.1 for the first time ever a few nights ago. This is my first run in with a linux distro and I can't say I'm enjoying my time yet
The install went smoothly. The included installer is really quite comprehensive and I enjoyed using it.
Now I'm set up to use KDE as my desktop interface (if that's what it's called... So many new terms lately) however when I boot into Mandrake (dual boot with Win XP Pro.... help i must escape) it just sits in the command prompt.
I was told by a friend that this was an issue with the video card. He has a 9800pro (same driver apparantly) and told me how to go about fixing the problem. Suffice it to say it didn't work.
I've got the driver burnt to a CD (the Linux partition doesn't show up under windows.. suprize suprize) since I can't get to ATI's website to download it under linux.
I've been given a few commands but a few different people. I may as well post them.
The first.
mnt/cdrom/ rpm -i --force fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8.i586.rpm
And then
su
rpm -ivh --force /mnt/cdrom/fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.2.8.i586.rpm
Neither of these have worked. With the first one I just get a dir not found error. Ok.
With the one Nil posted I get a read/write error. perhaps I did something wrong during the install process. Perhaps there's something I need to install before the video drivers.
I'm really not sure because after searching around google I've been able to find no cases of anyone having this problem? It seems that new hardware isn't supported under linux too well. Does this mean I'm gonna have to downgrade
