mandrake community 10.1 kernel boot problem

Hi,

I tried to install mandrake 10.1 community on a PIII machin.
During the installation anything were ok. but the system could not boot.

when the boot process launched vmlinuz, the system restarted.

I checked the bootsector and I used both lilo and grub.

for example I tried to boot the system with a grub boot diskett, in the following steps:

grab> root (hd0,6)
Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83

grab> kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda7
[Linux-bzImage, setup=0x1400, size=0x13e622]

grab> boot

the last command results restarting the system with any additional message.

I tried with another machin but the problem was not solved.

I can boot the installed mandrake 10.1 with SUSE Linux 9.1 Boot CD with the option of "Boot Installed System". But it is not possible to boot the system with its own kernel.

Any idea?

Thanks

Do you have an initrd image file also needed to boot?
2) your root command sets the path to /boot and appears to be on the same partition as your / partition is that correct?
3) post your /etc/fstab file or from memory what partitions you created.
4) post what kind of drive you have SATA, SCSI or ide and how many drives have you got, if more than one are they raided?

assuming its only an initrd issue here is a tutorial

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

yes initrd.img is in the boot directory. I added the initrd statement in the boot process. but the results was same.

The machine I tried to install on, is not a Pentium III, and it is a VIA Cyrix III 800A MHz.

I installed mandrake 10.1 community on a Pentium 4 in the same way with the same installation CDs.
Anything is OK. on the Pentium 4 system.

The olded mandrake 10.0 is already installed on the VIA Cyrix system and is working properly.

It seems that the new Mandrake 10.1 linux kernel (2.6.8) is not compatible with VIA Cyrix III based systems.

Has anybody an exprience of installing mandrake 10.1 on a VIA Cyrix III system?

Thanks

have you made your own initrd or used the defaults?

have you searched the kernel dox for a cyrix entry to use when you run
mkinintrd? eg use cyrix.o

I am not a kernel guru so you may need to read the kernel dox and if you don't know what else to configure when you make a new initrd post in the programming section?

if your mdk is working for the other cyrix have a bo-peep in the /boot files for the initrd and related config files and that may help

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

The problem was solved by installing the kernel-i586-1G-up instead of the defualt kernel.

It seems the mandrake installer, installs the wrong kernel (4G-up) for Cyrix III system.

Thanks
