Mandrake Auto Deletes my Programs??

Mandrake is deleting the start menu shortcuts to the programs after i use them! Such as last nigh i was playing my music on an audio player that came with mandrake and today i went to go play some more songs but the shortcut to the audio player was missing from my start menu.

So i'm thinking a whatever no problem i'll just go find the program and make a new shortcut, how hard can it be............ lets just say i didn't get very far..........

This problem o mine is that now whenever i use a program for like music, videos, text, etc. i can expect that the next time i startup mandrake that shortcut will be missing and there doesnt seem to be anything i can do about it

I just installed mandrake a couple days ago in an atempt to learn something new and to get away from microsoft, so im still learning the layout and havent been able to get very deep into it

The only programs ive got to run so far are the progs that came with mandrake
the only program ive tried to install myself is gaim and that aint going very well either

Newbie to linux - can you tell ive been using windows for years :Pengy:

You can always try the:
Code:

update-menus -v
To see if that works, remember to press ENTER after because it has a tendancy to hang after it runs.

Thank you, I will try that (right now i'm at school).

Even if that command does work it will just delete them again after i use the programs, does anyone know what i may have done to make this happen, or anyway i can stop it from happening in the future?

You could open a terminal window and open it from there and see if any messages are displayed.

bigbear,

You didn't say if you were running 9.2, or not.

If you are running 9.2, I STRONGLY suggest you "update". This can be done from the "Configuration"-"Packaging"-"Mandrake update" menu. I had some weird problems with the menu system and was running "update-menus -v" often. After "updating", the menus seem to work fine.

..just a thought.

yes I am running v9.2, and yes i already updated everything

Oddball79 12-05-2003 01:55 AM

well, there was an update today that had to do with menu items disapearing while using rpm. Maybe by some weird twist of fate your machine is looking at the rpm catalouge when you run the program.

Yes, I am pulling that explanation out of the standard orriface.

Oh, and the rsync update is absolutely crucial, so do it today!
