Mandrake 9.2 SpeedTouch USB
I just installed Mandrake 9.2 and i tried to install my usb adsl SpeedTouch i tough, it should be as simple as use the RPM and copy the microcode file (alcaudsl.sys) in \usr\share\speedtouch (like the assistant says)
But, it doesn´t connect. what is wrong? |
I'm just about to install 9.2 but I do not want the same problem. I've tried to test Mandrake Move and get the modem working but I just don't seem to be able to!
Having said that, I'm a complete novise at this whole LINUX thing but really want to try it out. I'm bored with Bill Gates! Please help us! Is there anychance someone could email both of us the whole, complete, ready to use and connect file to get our modem's working? Yours hopefully |
Here are different solutions i saw on french forums (a lot of questions about it...):
1st solution : - copy alcaudsl.sys as mgmt.o in /usr/share/speedtouch - run drakconnect and fill the forms with your logging data - click ok - as root, edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local and add these lines : Code:
modem_run -m -f /usr/share/speedtouch/mgmt.o 2nd solution : add this line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local (as root) Code:
/usr/share/speedtouch/speedtouch.sh start |
The first time I starte with Mandrake I got my Speedtouch 330 working no problem. The second time I tried to get it installed (after dropping Windows and reformating my computers hard-drive) was a bit of a problem.
The only things I had to change in the settings wizard where to add my user name and password (connecting to BT/Yahoo broadband) ie. username: ********@hg25.btinternet.com password: ************ Of course mgmt.o had been copied into the correct place. For some reason though the second time I couldn't connect for quite a long time - I think a few hours, then, after changing some configurations and changing them back again I got connected - I did notice I was having trouble connecting from a Windows PC (ie slower than normal) so my advice, if you think you have your settings correct, then be patient. Actually, I ended up installing Mandrake a third time and *then* my internet connection worked ... :) |
I already had the alcaudsl.sys and the mgmt.o (same alcaudsl.sys) in the /usr/share/speedtouch
so i did the solution bring by jib2 (thanks jib) but the it doesn´t connect |
i heard about problems with some versions of mgmt.o
maybe you could try another version: http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/in...wnload.fr.html you may also want to browse in Mandrake forum http://www.mandrakeclub.com/modules....e=Splatt_Forum |
also there is another thread about this problem in LQ :
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...h&pagenumber=3 look at post #36, quoting an answer from Mdk support. |
I already have installed the latest versions of (drakxtools, drakxtools, harddrake, harddrake-ui) from "ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/linux/Mandrake" and still the same.
Now i´m downloading from "http://sourceforge.net/projects/speedtouch" "May the force be with me" |
:D
OK, so last night I installed 9.2, it totally trashed my whole system! I ended up reformatting the hard drive, put XP back on cos I still need to use it, then tried my luck again with 9.2 and it worked straight away!!!! When it came to the modem, I made a note of the Alcatel file it needed, could not remember where it was going to be read from so I put it in the system and system32 folders and on a floppy. It didn't work from the floppy but I kept telling it to look at the windows partition and It found it. I'm on line with my alcatel ADSL no worries!! Life is sweet 9.2 is a strange and wonderful new world. |

Just out of Curiosity, did this do anything to your desktop / programmes ?? I installed the RPM's and I lost most of the menu options ie open office, even the connect tool dissapeared. |
There is a howto that comes with mandy in
/usr/share/doc/speedtouch/howto or at least there is in mine. I got the speedtouch tar from http://www.alcatel.com/consumer/dsl/dvrreg_lx.htm I just did a make make install and it worked. To get it working originally in 8.2 took me days. I left this message at mandrake expert; There are two incompatable drivers for the Alcatel SpeedTouch ADSL USB modem. One, from Alcatel, uses pppoatm.so and has to be compiled into the kernel. The other one, from Benoit Papillault, doesn't. Reading more than one howto, I ended up trying to install both. You need speedmgmt.tar.gz from http://www.alcatel.com/consumer/dsl/dvrreg_lx.htm which you don't install, you only need the micro code, and http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/s...ch-1.1.tar.gz. I followed the howto, and it still didn't work. At the bullitin board http://www.mail-archive.com/speedtouch@ml.free.fr I found the solution, which was to delete /usr/sbin/speedmgmt (the Alcatel Driver which I installed) off the system. Now, here I am using linux to access the internet via an ADSL modem. |
speedtouch with MDK 9.2
Comprehensive but in French.
